Wrapped up RE: Requiem yesterday. Really enjoyed the gameplay oscillation between Grace and Leon, especially the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center and Raccoon City. Has the same feeling as RE2R that makes me want to instantly replay it for ages.
Already deep in a 2nd playthrough.

I think this is one of the funnier episodes we've done in a while.
Now excuse me, the bombed out ruins of Raccoon City need me.

Resident Evil Requiem is Capcom taking the presentation of Alan Wake 2 and it's neo-noir influences (Seven, Cure etc.) and doing it the only way Resident Evil can.
I've have never been so locked in.

Still it manages to be all of those things while remaining a thrilling urban-warfare spy thriller as Black Freedom Fighters take back the streets of Chicago.
Lawrence Cook’s Dan Freeman is brimming with electric fury.
But the most tragic thing is how prescient these images are.

“You have just played out the American dream... and now, we're gonna turn it into a nightmare."
Incendiary, yet vital filmmaking that juggles its many tones with superb precision. Deliberate satire gives and revolutionary rhetoric that is deeply, deeply angry.

I keep forgeting that I actually scheduled a podcast and movie on Friday, the day I should absolutely NOT be bothered by anyone so I can play some Resident Evil: Requiem.
Ah well. I still have the weekend.

They dug it. Called the mortician and his zombies but didn't expect that final twist of the knife, which works for me. Helluva ending.

Exploring horror, film, and pop culture, all while celebrating the creators, history, and artistry that keep the genre alive.

I just realized we go that long and don't mention the outstanding work by series composer Akira Yamaoka. Do yourself a solid and give a listen to his work as it also helps elevate the three film adaptations.
And yes, I did enjoy RETURN TO SILENT HILL. Find out why below. 👇

Loved JACOB'S LADDER (1990).
Surreal and genuinely unsettling nightmare imagery throughout are led by a great Tim Robinson performance. All punctuated by a desire to escape the inevitable last glimpse of consciousness.
As undeniably influential and sad as they come.

A three-way fatalistic collision between the mob, cops, and thieves into a powder keg of racial tensions that is punctuated by a fantastic score and angrier denouncement.
Few can be so horrific, and authentic with such a bleak ending.
That final shot is damn near heartbreaking.

My own personal Blindspot Blaxploitation month continued and I was floored by ACROSS 110TH STREET (1972).
A raw, unflinching, white-hot neo-noir thriller with standout performances from Anthony Quinn and a commanding career best from Yaphet Kotto.

Yeah, kinda the best description. Although I'd also argue it gets the sadness of the game's ending right

and I think despite many of those same faults of the film there is an interesting reading to be had in the translation of adaptation between medium to medium. It's not one that works for me, but I can see a kernel of truth in the messiness, flaws and all.

There’s no denying the many, many shortcomings of SILENT HILL: REVELATION (2012). Stilted acting, a real lack of narrative drive, tension, or cinematic flair etc. But for all of its faults I’m not sure M.J. Basset bears the brunt of the blame...

Certainly helps that so much of Akira Yamaoka's score is reused to help really elevate this. Creepy visuals. Fantastic finale.
I'm never really sure what *it* is that enraptures me so, but I'm always compelled.

Nothing about this should work (and so much doesn't) as slapdashed elements from the first three games clash with a weak script.
But you can feel Gans love of the source material shine through and with it some great imagery evocative of the games and overall mood they conjure.
