A list of my favorite books I read this year:

10. Cane by Jean Toomer โ€ข a form-defying, expansive requiem for Black American life.

9. Memorial Days by Geraldine Brooks โ€ข a gorgeous reckoning with grief/the only book that made me cry this year.

8. Seascraper by Benjamin Wood โ€ข a delicate work of gutting disenchantment.

7. See Now Then by Jamaica Kincaid โ€ข a fraught and fierce family tale, uncannily entwined with Greek myth.

6. Pathemata, Or, The Story of My Mouth by Maggie Nelson โ€ข a profound yet personal examination of a harrowing medical mystery.

5. We Do Not Part by Han Kang (translated by E. Yaewon & Paige Aniyah Morris) โ€ข a piercing, political, metafictional whirlwind through traumatic histories, intimate connections, and layers of snow.

4. The Tyranny of Faith by Richard Swan โ€ข an unmatched sequel in an all-time new favorite fantasy epic, in which a peripheral character claws her way to the forefront.

3. The Mayor of Castro Street by Randy Shilts โ€ข a wickedly entertaining, complex, and sensitive biography of not only the trailblazing politician but the community he served.

2. The Intentions of Thunder by Patricia Smith โ€ข a well-curated New & Selected collection from a powerful artist. Transcendent, fresh, and daringโ€”give Patricia Smith 40 National Book Awards.

1. Trauma Plot by Jamie Hood โ€ข a pitch perfect blend of content & form, equal parts attuned the the literary zeitgeist and wholly personal. This memoir is the real dealโ€”an entrancing, metamorphosing, psychologically rich, sociologically incisive look at what it means to be an imperfect victim.
