We also offer guidance for future research to develop more rigorous and holistic models of participants, deepening our understanding of XAI tool use
For instance, we identified a significant link between confidence and conscientiousness, consistent with prior work on personality/trust and visualization-assisted decision-making
We rigorously verified that the linear modeling conventional to this line of research doesnβt fully capture the complexity of user characteristics for XAI. In contrast, our holistic exploratory analysis involving non-linear modeling and qualitative data uncovered rich insights
Research on how user characteristics shape XAI tool use has been stuck in a rut, with contradictory findings and an inability to replicate relationships between user characteristics and decision-making that have been well-established outside of XAI (e.g., effects of personality, prior experience)
Why do we keep measuring user characteristics for XAI like itβs a straight line when itβs a tangled web? At #FAccT2025, Iβm presenting my first paper (advised by @harmankaur.bsky.social) on how we can rethink measurement for a fuller picture. Read: bit.ly/4la41yG
Our paper won an Honorable Mention at #chi2025! We call for CHI researchers to fundamentally shift away from our status quo of undermining the epistemic authority of marginalized users @michaelann.bsky.social @taliabhatt.itch.io @nusealab.bsky.social
