It's 1:40 am. I'm laying awake in bed after caring for sick kids. Falling back to sleep, one name comes to me, through the mist: Shay Carl.

The Most Chilling Detail in the U.S. Attack on an Iranian Naval Ship The Iranian warship was taking part in an international exercise with many other countriesβ€”including the United States.

This is a chilling crime. A shame on our country. The Iranian ship was unarmed. The US knew this. The sailors were murdered by our navy, and the survivors were left to die at sea.

No. Peter Thiel cannot be allowed to annex the National Science Foundation via this Palantir proxy.

It would be like putting a pyromaniac in charge of the Library of Alexandria: destruction of a global treasure with no "undo" button.

This is a "to the barricades" moment.

When the environment recovers, no one talks about it Plus: Britain’s inactivity crisis is receding, Western power is underestimated, and more

In today’s newsletter: the immense power of negativity bias.

It leads us to exaggerate social and environmental problems and to underestimate Western power.

Correcting for this bias is central to a correct worldview.

Hannah Ritchie has built a fun little tool where you can compare energy usage of various products and activities.

This is super helpful imho, because it's so hard to develop intuitions even just about the scales involved here.

THREAD: Misinformation in the Iran/US/Israel war - 3 March

This viral video claims to show the aftermath of a reported drone attack on the US embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, tonight.

But the video was posted last week to TikTok, and shows an unrelated car accident in Riyadh.

Even if this was a reasonable policy - which it isn’t - are you really going to trust the Americans only to fly defensive missions from the bases? What are they going to say? β€˜Scout’s honor?’

Reform win a seat: The true Volk have spoken and we all must listen.

Greens win a seat: Early reports that Muslims may have β€˜voted’ (an ancient Islamic practice designed to steal elections). How severely should the franchise be limited in response?

Chart of trends in recovered organs from circulatory deaths

The number of organs available for donation has risen massively in the past five years.

It seems to be the result of technological advances in preserving organs after circulatory death.

User Chris: What was the core difference why you think the DoW accepted OpenAI but not Anthropic

Sam Altman:
I can't speak for them, but to speculate with the best understanding of the situation.

*First, I saw reporting that they were extremely close on a deal, and for much of the time both sides really wanted to reach one. I have seen what happens in tense negotiations when things get stressed and deteriorate super fast, and I could believe that was a large part of what happened here.

*We believe in a layered approach to safety--building a safety stack, deploying FDEs and having our safety and alignment researcher involved, deploying via cloud, working directly with the DoW. Anthropic seemed more focused on specific prohibitions in the contract, rather than citing applicable laws, which we felt comfortable with. We feel that it it's very important to build safe system, and although documents are also important, I'd clearly rather rely on technical safeguards if I only had to pick one.

*We and the DoW got comfortable with the contractual language, but I can understand other people would have a different opinion here.

*I think Anthropic may have wanted more operational control than we did

I saw some folks asking what the difference was between what OpenAI signed with the DoD and what Anthropic said they wanted, and Sam more or less admits here the key point: OpenAI's deal requires them to trust the NSA. Anthropic's contract had real safeguards.
