Senate Committee Approves Bill to Expand NOAA Capabilities - Eos The markup meeting, to discuss the NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2026 and the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Reauthorization Act of 2026, lasted less than 20 minutes.

The bill, which Sen. Ted Cruz said “is aimed at improving the accuracy and actionability of forecasts and weather warnings, as well as modernizing weather systems,” will next go to the Senate floor for a full chamber vote.

A Lone Dolphin Takes Up Residence in Front of St. Mark's Square, Venice When you picture Venice, you probably imagine gondolas gliding past centuries-old palaces. What you don’t expect to see is a bottlenose dolphin playing in the water in front of St. Mark’s Square. Yet that’s exactly what happened last summer, when a lone dolphin nicknamed Mimmo began cruising through the Venetian Lagoon, and eventually settled in San Marco Basin, one of the busiest tourist hubs in Venice. Bottlenose dolphins typically travel in small social groups, making extended solitary stays like this relatively rare. Now, a study published in Frontiers in Ethology documents the dolphin’s movements over several months and explores what his presence reveals about wildlife management in urban waters. The researchers say Mimmo’s appearance isn’t the real concern.
