Imagine viewing this and concluding that academic Gender Studies is no longer relevant as a field of inquiry.

Many collections everywhere, but particularly beyond Europe or N. America, are undercatalogued or not catalogued at all. When they burn, no trace survives.

For the "everything is online" crowd in the back:

Important to consider that "everything" cultural heritage related that is accessible online represents only 1% (one percent) of archives, libraries, and museum collections worldwide.

I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing β€˜reviewed’ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.

Epic Fury: Donald Trump, Israel's Iran strike is righteous | The Jerusalem Post Donald Trump’s Iran war, Operation Epic Fury, is absolutely and fantastically righteous, as is Israel’s Operation Roaring Lion. Today, both the Persian and Jewish people celebrate a Purim miracle.

An Ohio newspaper has a new star writer. It isn’t human. At the 184-year-old Cleveland Plain Dealer, a top editor’s push to let AI draft news articles is boosting traffic β€” and spooking staffers.

At a Cleveland newspaper, reporters assigned to the suburbs β€œare now expected to file four stories a day with the help of AI.”

Also: one reporter β€œsaid they were caught off guard when their annual performance review indicated insufficient AI use.”

Today I learned that tempura originated from Portuguese missionaries in 16th century Japan, who brought their tradition of breading and frying foods with them. The name apparently comes from the Latin phrase β€œad tempora cuaresma” (in the time of Lent) because it was popular Lenten food.

TL;DR it's free; just go read it! The topic ended up way more "relevant" today than it was waaaaay back when he started. But his initial aim still holds: he thinks that these writings bear overlooked significance & thus gives the gift to non-Hebrew readers of the chance to decide for themselves

Shaul is best known for his public-facing work. But he spends a lot of time translating, mostly for himself, sometimes for classes, rarely for self-standing publication. And as anyone married to a translator no doubt knows, it is slooooow work--albeit w/a rhythm thus ringing deep into everyday life

The attractiveness of agentic AIs is a symptom of a decades-long trend in higher education. β€œUniviristies…by and large adopted a transactive model of education,” Kirschenbaum said. β€œStudents see their diploma as a credential. They pay tuition and at the end of four years, sometimes five years, they receive the credential and, in theory at least, that is then the springboard to economic stability and prosperity.”

Lots of good quotes here, and I think if anything good comes out of this awfulness it will perhaps be academics rethinking our reflexive obeisance to prestige and wealth.

These are β€œlow enrollment” majors but the classes are regularly at capacity. They changed the funding structure a few years ago here, switching the allocation from course enrollments to majors then blamed these departments for a structural, top-down change. This is entirely a political choice.

Our society is so fixated on sexual violence, and yet so unwilling to examine the underlying attitudes that produce it. If you don't eliminate misogyny and patriarchy, you will never stop the violent symptoms they inexorably produce.
