Minneapolis City Council
350 South 5th Street
Room 370
Minneapolis, MN 55415
Dear Council President Payne, Council Vice President Osman and Council Members:
This letter is to inform you that I have vetoed Ordinance No. 2026-002 to extend the pre-eviction notice for
renters to 60 days. I understand the authors’ intent, but the experience from COVID-19 and guidance from
shelter and affordable housing providers shows that this strategy has not worked. We have heard over and over
again from shelter and affordable housing providers that longer timelines produce worse outcomes for
residents. In their words, when rental assistance isn’t available, time is a debt trap that becomes a barrier to
securing future housing.
I heard a call for more financial assistance, and I believe that is the best path forward. Rental assistance is
working and getting to renters quickly – rent collections are better in 2026 than 2025. That’s why I’m proposing
to spend $1 million from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund for emergency rental assistance administered
through Hennepin County.
While a 60-day pre-eviction notice period sounds good, there is no data to show that it does good. Pandemic
era eviction moratorium allowed many renters to accumulate huge amounts of debt that they are still paying off
today. When property owners carry the losses, the housing system experiences upward pressure on rents to
replenish reserves, catch up on missed mortgage, insurance, utility, payroll, and property tax payments, and
cover increased costs associated with deferred maintenance.
I believe most landlords are working with tenants to develop payment plans and access rental assistance. But for
bad actors, I worry that the proposal gives them reasons to report tenants to ICE or use minor lease violationswhich don’t require as much notice and are harder to expunge – to evict tenants.
We will continue to monitor the data. If something substantially changes, I am committed to working with the

4th Circuit Rules That States Can Compel Trans Adults To "Appreciate Their Sex" Via Care Bans They ruled that states "encouraging citizens to appreciate their sex" through care bans is a constitutional goal, affirming West Virginia's Medicaid ban for trans adults.

1. Horrifying ruling out of the 4th Circuit.

An all-Republican 4th Circuit panel has just ruled that states can compel trans adults to "appreciate their sex" by enacting care bans.

It even directly says that trans adult care bans are legal in the ruling.

the truly wild thing is there's no way to know if you're in their little fucked machine. It's a dynamic system that suggests "experts" contextually. there's no list, there's no nothing. so if you don't know you're in it how do you know to opt out?

🚨 Donald Trump is offering a new justification for the war today, claiming the U.S. had to strike Iran because β€œif we waited any longer – if we didn’t hit within two weeks – they would have had a nuclear weapon.”

β–ͺ️U.S. intelligence assessments in recent years have consistently said Iran is not currently building a nuclear weapon, though it has expanded enrichment capacity.

β–ͺ️ The U.S. intelligence community’s annual threat assessments have repeatedly stated that Iran’s leadership has not made the decision to build a nuclear bomb.

β–ͺ️ The IAEA has confirmed Iran enriched uranium to high levels (up to about 60% purity), which is not yet weapons-grade, and does not mean a bomb is imminent. Turning that material into a deliverable nuclear weapon would take additional steps and time.

β–ͺ️ Weapons experts agree the timeline from enriched uranium to an actual deployable nuclear weapon is far longer than two weeks β€” about 6-9 months.

🚨Abducted, tortured and killed. An Israeli occupation special forces unit seized farmer Montaser Samour, shot him, and later returned his body riddled with bullets near Al-Qarara in northern Khan Younis. Maher Samour was also shot and killed in the same incident outside the so-called buffer zone, in what witnesses describe as a field execution.

Residents say the two men were targeted by Israeli occupation forces while in the area, and that one of them was shot again after being detained. Earlier accounts described how one was killed on the spot while the other was wounded, taken away alive, and later found with multiple gunshot wounds, his body bearing signs locals say point to torture.

Dozens of mourners filled the streets of Khan Younis to carry the bodies of Maher and Montaser Samour, as anger and grief spread through the city. Families and neighbours say the two men posed no threat and were simply present near their land.

The agents who murdered Good and Pretti have had lengthy careers.

ICE (and CBP) are rotten to the core. The agents who murdered people less than a mile from my house have trained others and harmed others.

Abolish ICE. Break up DHS. The agency isn’t even old enough to rent a car. End it.

New data shows surge in trans kids’ suicides following healthcare rollbacks | Good Law Project A freedom of information request by Good Law Project has found that deaths by suicide of trans young people under 18 surged following the withdrawal of gender-affirming healthcare

The number of trans youth suicides in the UK quadrupled in 2021 following significant restrictions in access to care. The NHS tried to cover this up with a fake report that tried to hide the truth.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” Alberto CastaΓ±eda MondragΓ³n says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance.

But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain.

He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again.

He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.

ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man β€œpurposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”

What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.
