Maybe the first step is simply making sure the scores match the comments. Anyway. Curious if others have seen similar things in conference reviews.

Conference review cultures still quietly assume a default voice and style of English. If we want DH to be genuinely international, we probably need to ask harder questions about how language gets evaluated in conference reviews and whether our rubrics are actually being followed.
In global fields like Digital Humanities, βreadabilityβ can quietly become a proxy for judging how closely writing conforms to "native" English expectations, even in supposedly blind review where reviewers can often infer an authorβs "background" from the topic or context. (A conversation for later)
Conference mystery of the week:
If a review gives a paper 6/10 for readability but the comment says βNo issue at all,β what exactly is being evaluated? Vibes? Or just an ineffable sense that the English isβ¦ insufficiently "native"? π§

Last week, I had the privilege of attending a research retreat with @bridgdivides.bsky.social, learning about fascinating work being done by colleagues on migration. A colleague and I presented on epistemic injustices from algorithmic bias in migration management in Canada. Paper coming soon!

For those uninitiated in the fantasyland of Bollywood, this is the song at the end of his speech:

No way he just quoted Nehru in his speech and end it with Dhoom Machale, the ultimate Bollywood banger!!! #LFG
Last year, my partner & I dressed as samosa-chutney for Halloween, banking on Halloween and Diwali falling on the same date. This year, we took a U-turn in our ertswhile fun approach & I dressed as the Visa Process. It was fun, in a way. If fun could mean cathartic. (Pics available on request, haha)
Having taken DHSI courses online while sitting in my bedroom in India to taking more DHSI courses in its legendary Victoria days to now teaching at DHSI, this feels so surreal! I am so lucky to have received such amazing support from my supervisor, Prof. Rockwell & the support from the DH community.
I am so so so thrilled to share that I will be teaching a course on #Voyant and #Spyral at DHSI in Montreal in June 2026, with the lead programming developer of Voyant, Andrew MacDonald. Come, join us in exploring the messy world of textual analysis!
