That never really bothered me, a game being open or linear is just a gameplay choice it's not inheritly a negative or positive on it's own.

First thing I'll say. FFXIII's visuals have aged very gracefully, you can tell they put a lot of work into making this game look as good as possible for it's time.

So far having no issues! I also downloaded an hd texture pack thing
