Ken Workman, Duwamish Councilmember, looks up at the memorial obelisk at Alki with Puget Sound in the background.
Today we mark 174 years since the Denny Party landed at #Alki, The land’s beauty came from generations of care by the Duwamish. Settlers survived only with Duwamish support, then pushed them out. As we enter November, reflect on this history and seek ways to honor the #Duwamish community today.
🎨 We are thrilled to announce that the Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center will host our Annual Native Art Market from Friday, November 28 through Sunday, November 30 from 10am to 5pm each day.

Graphic with text reading: Real Rent Duwamish. $2,484.00. Total donations 2021–2025.
From 2021–2025, whilst(!) my studio was open, I gave $54/month to @realrentduwamish.bsky.social, totaling $2,484. 100% supports Duwamish Tribal Services and the Duwamish Longhouse. As I close this chapter, I’m grateful: small, steady contributions do add up.

We may be in popup mode, but that won’t prevent us from paying Real Rent to the Duwamish Tribe. We'll continue to pay annually in solidarity with the First Peoples of this land. @realrentduwamish.bsky.social #IndigenousPeoplesDay

There are two easy ways to do this: post on Bluesky and tag @realrentduwamish.bsky.social or email to realrentduwamish@gmail.com using the subject line “Real Rent yard sign photo”. As a friendly reminder, please don’t include addresses of residential signs in photos. Let's go!
Hey #RealRenters! If you’re like us, you smile when you see a #RealRent yard sign in your neighborhood or elsewhere “in the wild”, like at your favorite local shop or coffee spot. Let’s amplify this support for the #Duwamish Tribe and Real Rent by posting photos of signs spotted around town!
The attached pictures come from the Rainier Beach neighborhood in Southeast Seattle. Sign up to pay Real Rent and grab your sign from the Duwamish Longhouse!

Despite this ratified treaty, the Duwamish Tribe is not federally recognized; the promises have never been honored by the US. In 2022, the Tribe filed a lawsuit against the Department of the Interior the long-awaited federal recognition to the Tribe.
Visit www.duwamishtribe.org to learn more.
In return for the reservation and other benefits promised in the treaty by the United States government, the Duwamish Tribe exchanged over 54,000 acres of their homeland. Today those 54,000 acres include the cities of Seattle, Renton, Tukwila, Bellevue, and Mercer Island, and much of King County.”
An excerpt from the Duwamish Tribe website: “the 1855 Treaty created a Government-to-Government relationship between the United States and the Dxʷdəwʔabš.. The Treaty of Point Elliott guaranteed hunting and fishing rights and reservations to all Tribes represented by the Native signers.
