Part of Trump’s mass appeal (and of why he’s so dangerous) is that he really seems to share Joe Barstool’s worldview that there are no complex problems: Everything has a simple brute solution, which previous leaders were somehow too stupid or weak to deploy.

remember when the IRS put out a a free online tax filing system where you could just do your taxes through the IRS and it was actually well made and was pretty well recieved and then the tax filing industry and Republicans killed it and now you have to use TurboTax again

I am also shocked by the lack of coverage of this fire. It’s so far only affecting the Union Street buildings, but one of those has partially collapsed, from what I can tell backwards into the station. And it’s not yet contained. This is major and more than halfway down BBC’s homepage.

Tweet from Paula Scanlan that reads, "the number of people I still see wearing face masks in the year 2026 is genuinely concerning"

Tweet from Jerome Adams that reads, "Why do you care? Honestly asking. I thought the original mantra was “to each their own.” It sounds like you’re wanting to impose your priorities/belief systems on others while saying they shouldn’t impose theirs on you? What am I missing?

Also, beyond Covid – many people have found wearing a mask, has lowered their allergy symptoms- and pollen counts are rising this time of year. And Asian cultures have worn masks for years – are you bothered by Asians? Again honestly asking. 🤷🏽‍♂️"

Appreciate former Sugreon General Jerome Adams pushing back on anti-mask sentiment on Twitter/X

frankly I think tourists from the US *should* be asked this question, and maybe those who voted this way this woman clearly did should have to think for a damn minute about how their actions have impacted others. also: you can't just "get away from all that," for heavens sake.

Ooh, "Wooden Ships" is a good choice. I went with "Ohio" and Belafonte's "Carnival" as performed on the Smothers Brothers, iirc (Been a while - '98 for me!) Love Owen's work, too - he's not taught in schools in my neck of the woods, so I had to discover him on my own.

(Was this my central thesis for one of my AP US History exam essays? Yes, yes it was. How'd it go over? Remarkably well, actually! So thanks, Joe. I made a bunch of bored/overworked proctors discuss *this* in serious tones - still proud of that. Hope he is, too.)

Country Joe McDonald, Country Joe and the Fish Singer, Dead at 84 Country Joe McDonald, Country Joe and the Fish singer who penned the anti-Vietnam War anthem "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag," has died at the age of 84.

Gimme an F!.. gimme a U!.. gimme a C!.. gimme a K!.. What's zat spell?! What's it spell? What's it SPELL?!..

Country Joe is dead just when we need the Fish Cheer most.

(Woodstock rendition of Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die-Rag down thread, for who don't know it.)

When Graham and Trump speak like this publicly, I fear they are privately discussing using tactical nuclear weapons. Their thirst for blood and destruction seems unquenchable.

...inside the bubble of cosplay science these self-important failures have used to claw their way to the top of medicine's management class, the real thing *doesn't matter*.

Because to them "science" is just a word they use to launder their opinions.

They don't understand the *concept* of rigour.

...why, in 2026, are infection control and public health leaders *still* deceiving the public about the fact that COVID is airborne, and proper PPE and good ventilation can stop it?

Because of a culture of collusion that will sacrifice a million lives to protect a few senior clinicians.

Because...

...here's why medicine's management class ignored clear warnings from experts who knew far more than they did about the science, aerosols and disease transmission.

The arrogant little pause to emphasize that only the opinions of senior *clinicians* are allowed to matter is what killed us.

But...

This is an excellent, brief video compilation highlighting the fact that a COVID pandemic was not inevitable.

It was preventable, allowed only by the arrogant incompetence of medical infection control leaders who saw outsiders as rivals for *their* turf.

Watch Martin's video below, then...

Iran’s people were facing a horrible shortage of water before the war began. If we are destroying desalination plants and setting fire to Teheran we are committing unfathomable crimes.

I think about this all the time. And for faculty in good jobs it still has some of that — I do enjoy knowledge making. But those are so so few and everywhere else the academe is indentured labor to a loan shark.

I wonder how many people realize this is the norm.

“Households containing an adult w/a work-disability require, on average…an additional $17,690/year…to obtain the same standard of living as a comparable household w/o a member w/a disability.”

Working in a pandemic world is just listening to colleagues say “there must be something going around” on a weekly basis for years and trying to decide if you wanna remind them it’s covid or silently scream into the void again.

American democracy began in 1965. It will end in 2026 when the Roberts Court overturns the Voting Rights Act.

Weird how creating conditions where powerful people never have to face real accountability leads to powerful people abusing their power. Who could have predicted that?

Yes, it was completely irresponsible and scaremongering to say maybe we shouldn’t repeatedly expose kids to a novel organ-damaging virus. What nerve! Glad we fixed that by just collectively pretending it’s all in the past and no longer a threat. There, that wasn’t so hard, was it? #COVID

Like a lot of things rich guys believe and fund, the AI consciousness thing is in part driven by a desire to abscond from the responsibility of what they've made. It also explains why so many of them think we're in a simulation. Doesn't matter if everybody died if we're all just 1s and 0s baby!

Here’s a tidbit I couldn’t fit into the story: As the Berlin Wall was falling, FBI counterintelligence began to circulate a highly-classified bulletin about the intel activities of all the Warsaw Pact spy services, tracking their moves toward the West. The name of that bulletin?

“Winds of Change”

I can explain it right now tbh, they don't consider the rest of us human much less American. It's not national suicide, it is a family annihilation perpetuated by people who lied and grifted and stole they way into power and are using it to consolidate resources ahead of the climate catastrophe

Even with all the video footage, tweets, and the rest of the contemporaneous documentation, none of it will ever make any sense.

It may actually make less and less sense the more historians delve into the evidence. 21st century US history is going to be the domain of psychologists, not historians.

For those who have forgotten the past 40 years:

Tax cuts for the rich
...don’t trickle down

Boosting military spending
...doesn’t bring peace

Slashing regulations
...doesn’t create jobs

Folks, we’ve seen this all before.

Tired of unqualified hacks running the U.S. public health system? I sure am.

Sometimes it feels like there is nothing we can do to fight this.

But right now, we can write letters to our Senators to oppose Casey Means as Surgeon General to prevent yet another quack from gaining power.

Ah well, maybe someone wealthy will find out the hard way and decide to actually fund DME in such a way that one doesn't have to defecate solid gold to afford a wheelchair. I mean, probably not - guys like that generally yank the ladder up ASAP (Abbott), but I can dream.

Oh good, now it's "don't say polio"? Do ableds think viruses work like Voldemort, where if you don't say the name it can't find you? Seriously, trying to figure out what the benefit of "don't say polio/covid/measles" actually is to society, other than you think it magically won't be you.
