i tend to use photopea which is a browser-based editing app (it has a dumb "generate with ai" button that you can kinda just ignore), also i think you could run paint . net using winboat but i haven't really tried it myself

the only non-native app i've struggled to get running is clip studio paint, which works mostly fine but took a long time to get working

i don't use mint, i use endeavouros (which i would not recommend to a beginner) but yeah i run gd with proton and it works flawlessly. with basically zero setup (all i need is a startup argument for geode, a mod loader for gd, which is basically just copy paste)

And Uh not to mention i've been working on my linux guide which is (partially) tailored for linux mint! and lastly, if you don't enjoy your distro of choice, it's not... *particularly* hard to switch to a different one lazloslinuxguide.straw.page

- mint's also very windows-like in terms of its ui so the learning curve is shorter in that regard

fedora is also really good for a more up-to-date system but that can make it a bit harder to maintain + it needs a bit of extra setup that generally just isn't told to the user (multimedia codecs...)

*linux nerd slides in* I would personally recommend linux mint since it'll probably give you the least headaches

- mint is based on ubuntu (which is based on debian); anything that works for ubuntu/debian will work for mint, excluding snap, which is a good thing
