That seems wrong. If your password for Google account is compromised, then it will automatically let the attacker sign into all the places where you used Sign in with Apple even though your Apple account password was never compromised or vice versa. The user may not even be expecting that behavior.

Made the cover of @acm.org with "A Decade of Docker Containers", recapping much systems work! Docker grew so fast in those early days that we never got a chance to write an academic paper about it, so this has been a long time coming cacm.acm.org/research/a-d... w/ @justincormack.bsky.social djs55

In Washington State, Democrats Consider Breaking a Taboo: Taxing the Rich
Once again Dems make a lot of noise initially about taxing billionaires and wealth tax but when it comes to it, they always silently end up increasing taxes for people with W-2 income. So a billionaire with zero or low W-2 income isn’t going to be affected much. #wa

They are just talking about state university or other state government agency sponsored H1B employees (like post-doctorate researchers). Texas state government obviously cannot stop private tech firms from hiring H1B workers. It doesn’t affect them much.

The state legislature in TX and FL (GOP controlled) will not pass a wealth tax. So they don’t have to care if the cities are liberal leaning.

I’m pretty sure most of these billionaires own homes in Miami already. Even if they didn’t, it is easy to sign a rental lease with short notice. I’m guessing the purpose of the Miami office announcement is to establish a paper trail so you can prove to CA FTB you’re no longer a CA resident.

It doesn’t even need to be all the states - just the ones where billionaires are most likely to move to. No billionaire is going to move to OK or SD just to save money 😂

some good climate/energy news:
* 96% of new US power capacity was carbon-free in 2024 (56 gigawatts!)
* 2025 included the first month ever when 51% of power on the U.S. grid was carbon-free
* The golbal trend is overwhelming: The world is now investing more $ in clean energy than fossil fuels

I think this concern of all jobs will be done by AI and humans will be destitute might be overblown. Who are all these companies going to sell products/services to make any money if no one has jobs and money to spend?

It seems like an arbitrary point in time to stop progress? Why do we use calculators and computers at all? We could also have used an army of humans to just sit in a room and crunch numbers all day long.

You do realize that many cities which have amazing public transit like Singapore also use fully automated subway trains right (no human drivers for the trains). Anything that can be automated to be safe and reliable should be done so.

European hotels can learn to do air conditioning properly from American hotels but American hotels can learn to adopt the heated towel radiator in bathroom (you get a perfectly dry towel every time you go back to use it).

Credit where it’s due: USPS accidentally put a package of mine on hold. I file a service request online using just the tracking number. Within the next business day, they resolve it promptly and the lady from local post office left a voicemail apologizing!

I can see banning single-use plastic bottles completely but what is the point of this except to annoy everyone? It has the same effect as those GDPR-compliant “Allow cookies” pop-ups.

My first truly well-paid job happened thanks to someone I met on the 'birdsite' referring me to a role in the company they worked for. I successfully made it through the interviews. It would have been nearly impossible to get an interview without that referral.

Curing American healthcare through incentives and choice
Good overview of how the current employer-based health insurance system came into place in the USA after WWII due to an attempt by the government to control inflation by freezing wages. But they allowed a loophole - pensions and healthcare were exempt.
