Our kids represent the future of DC, and they can't wait - we have to keep building on the progress we've made so that every child has the excellent education they need to thrive. As Tara shared in her testimony, "It really is simple: invest now or pay later."
🎯 Protecting & expanding access to high-impact tutoring
📚 Transparency in curriculum so parents can know whether their child's school is using high-quality instructional materials
👩🏾🏫 Professional development & coaching for teachers in literacy & math best practices
Ward 6 Parent Leader Tara Brown & PAVE Chief of Policy Kerry Savage testified at yesterday's @councilofdc performance oversight hearing for @osse.dc to advocate for 3 key academic supports:

We’re proud that the legacy of the Consolidated Parents Group lives on in our PAVE Parent Leaders - most of whom are Black mamas - who continue to advocate for an excellent education for every child. This & every month, we celebrate the Black leaders who got us here & inspire our work every day ✊🏾💜
Bolling v. Sharpe is significant because, as DC is not a state, the ruling established that the 14th Amendment’s requirement that states treat their citizens equally - along with the ruling in Brown v. Board that segregated schools violated the 14th Amendment - applies at the federal level as well.
The Supreme Court heard the case, Bolling v. Sharpe, as a companion to Brown v. Board of Education, and in 1954 ruled in both cases that segregation of schools was unconstitutional.
In 1950 the group's co-founder tried to enroll 11 Black students in the then-all-white Sousa Junior High, which the Consolidated Parents Group had petitioned to be an integrated school. After they were denied entry, a Howard law professor sued the DC Board of Ed. on behalf of 4 kids & their parents.
The Consolidated Parents Group was a group of parents from Anacostia who pushed for better school options for Black students in DC, including school integration.
For our final Black History Month feature of Black leaders who paved the way for DC's education system as we know it today, we're highlighting the power of parent advocacy!
