software people are generally huge tolkien fans which makes it doubly funny that we’ve all been given the One Ring and are going around saying β€œoh wow this is SUPER handy, i cannot see any possible downside”

LOTR was published when he was 64 but he worked out the languages, mythology, and much of the story decades previously.

That is the dangerous part about caves. You don’t know how far they go back, or what is waiting for you inside… I am reading The History of the Hobbit by John Rateliff, on page 129 out of 912 πŸͺπŸ“š

Timeline: How the Shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti Unfolded A moment-by-moment analysis of video from the scene shows that Mr. Pretti was already restrained when fatal shots were fired, which appears to contradict the federal government’s account of the event.

Alex Pretti was already restrained when federal agents shot and killed him in Minneapolis, a New York Times analysis of video shows. The footage contradicts the Department of Homeland Security’s account of the shooting.

Forest Shuffle. Not deck building but tableau building. Similar nature theme.

Excerpt reads: "Prioritize your neighborhood
Neighborhoods drive our happiness (or unhappiness) more than we think.

When Lina Martinez, director of POLIS, the Center for Wellbeing Studies at Universidad Icesi in Colombia, studied the happiness of households in the city of Cali, she couldn’t find much difference between poorer and richer areas. β€œTheir happiness is pretty much the same,” she said. But that changed when she isolated neighborhood conditions, such as access to transit, health care and parks. β€œThe conditions of the neighborhood affect happiness,” she said. β€œI can’t link that to the space where [people] live.”

That aligns with findings from a 2023 study of the Vancouver metro area: Researchers found no significant differences in well-being between people living in single detached homes, duplexes, townhouses, laneway houses and apartment buildings (basement units smaller than 300 square feet were the only negative exception). What did people say they missed most in their neighborhood? Affordability, proximity to family and friends, and a sense of community. Home design was eighth on the list."

A Washington Post article suggests that, beyond a certain threshold, larger homes don't make people happier. Instead, well-being is correlated with affordable housing in walkable neighborhoods where they feel socially connected.

2025 in board games. The big, new game of the year for me was Forest Shuffle. Highly recommended with the Alpine Expansion. My busiest month of gaming was November. #boardgames #bgstats

I Set A Trap To Catch My Students Cheating With AI. The Results Were Shocking. "Students are not just undermining their ability to learn, but to someday lead."

Interesting article... over a third of the class used AI to write their papers for them. It's rather depressing for those of us who would like our students to actually think about things. #PhDlife #ai

Trajan Manage and rule all aspects of Ancient Rome with a clever action selection mancala.

Barb and I have now played 20+ games of Trajan, mostly 2-player. It's a fun, complex, point salad of a game with a thin Roman theme. The +2 extra action is a great opening tile, especially when (frequently) combined with a useful extra action tile from the forum. #boardgames
