Today at 1109Z what looks like a mass spoof event of AIS-signal took place in central Baltic Sea.
In an area from approximately Bornholm to mid Gulf of Finland hundreds (thousands?) of new AIS-messages suddenly appeared. A large part of them military ships.
pretty much all of these services (vesselfinder, marinetraffic, flightradar24 etc) use/sell data volunteered by people running receiver stations, mostly at their homes.
or maybe not baofeng, but in any case it should not be hard to hack transmitter together if in does need to be reliable (and in this case it does not)
Haven't checked around much, but my first guess is physical radio transmitter near one or several receivers.

I think 29 countries is lot of space to travel. Of older folks I can imagine that some could been living and died in another country. As russian citizens, russia would probably be notified instead of Latvia.
