Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights is a Deranged, Half-Assed Bodice-Ripper That Entirely Misses the Point I did not quite finish my umpteenth read of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights prior to seeing Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights. Ever the overeager lit student, I entered the theater positive that…

"In 1987, Andrea Dworkin wrote of Wuthering Heights that 'we have not yet faced what Emily Brontë knew & said & showed' about the relationship between race, gender, sadism, power, & justice. Fennell’s WH makes it clear that we are still not willing to go and look." lithub.com/emerald-fenn...

What do Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's clothes really reveal? A new biography of the doomed fashion icon highlights the bizarre ritual of dressing for public consumption, and the tyranny of personal style.

Watching LOVE STORY? Here's a piece I wrote about Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's clothes, the bizarre ritual of dressing for public consumption, and the tyranny of personal style, for my newsletter raquellaneri.substack.com/p/what-do-ca...

Bad clothes for bad people The Bezos go to the couture shows! Plus, fashion during wartime and Miss Dior, Resistance hero,

This news abt the Washington Post makes my blood boil. While the newsroom prepared to lose A THIRD of its staff, Jeff Bezos & Lauren Sanchez were at Paris couture week, shopping for million-dollar gowns. Wrote abt that & fashion's relationship w/ evil here raquellaneri.substack.com/p/bad-clothe...

The Argentinian grandmothers who resisted the military junta - and fought to find their stolen grandchildren Haley Cohen Gilliland "A Flower Traveled in My Blood" is the best, most timely book I read in 2025.

I have thought about the extraordinary A FLOWER TRAVELED IN MY BLOOD basically every day since I read it this summer. It's about grandmothers who stood up to Argentina's fascist government & fought to find the grandchildren who were stolen from them. Read it raquellaneri.substack.com/p/the-argent...

I should add that the only reason I know grammar is that my mom sent me to a Catholic school when I was little, where the teachers made us diagram sentences. (I really liked diagraming sentences — one of the only things I did like about Catholic school!)

I think people see it elsewhere and then copy it, because they presume it's right & because it does indeed look fancy. People don't learn grammar anymore. Actually, people my age didn't learn grammar either, but many of us still had teachers/editors who corrected grammar — not anymore.

Also: as a former copyeditor, the hyphenated adverb-adjective DRIVES ME INSANE. It is truly an epidemic!!!!! I've actually had editors PUT IT INTO my copy!!!! Revolting!

I came here b/c I wanted to thank you for your Brontë family biography. I just started rereading WUTHERING HEIGHTS (it's been about 2 decades!) & was craving some supplemental stuff about Emily. HER MIND!!! (I also have Gaskell's Charlotte bio, tho understand it's not entirely trustworthy?)

Ugly clothes for ugly times Why fashion is so hideous right now. Plus: Thank goodness for Yohji Yamamoto and my favorite Spring 2026 collections!

Garish colors, tacky lace, flamboyant muscle tees and hairy trompe l'oeil bodysuits ... why is fashion so hideous right now, and is there a way to dress with dignity as the world around us collapses? raquellaneri.substack.com/p/ugly-cloth...

I have been thinking about how pointless getting dressed & thinking about clothes feels right now, with *gestures wildly* ALL THIS. But then I saw this painting of an 80s babe wearing a kitschy sweater and ... wrote this raquellaneri.substack.com/p/does-fashi...

Has anyone ever worn a movie costume better than Robert Redford in his navy pea coat in Three Days of the Condor?

I just went to Instagram to post this pea coat (and the shearling one he wore in DOWNHILL RACER, which is a close second)! Third place: Robert Redford in a leather jacket in Spy Game. Or Robert Redford in a trench in a half dozen other movies ... The man knew how to wear coats!

no more posting about any of those “writing routines of famous writers” unless it’s Edmund White’s

There are so many ways in which Edmund White was remarkable. I want to point out two. The first is that he wrote about sex more, and more avidly and explicitly, than any other major gay writer. It was core to his identity. He left nothing out. He dared you to flinch at it. (I flinched many times.) >

Fascinating, probing, beautifully written piece (I did not know that the term "closet" came from Confidential Magazine!) that also has new photos by THE GREAT 93-year-old(!!) legend Duane Michals?!?!?!?!?!!!!

I'm grading papers and I need some music recs!!! Bach OBVIOUSLY is best for writing, but feel like it's not hitting the spot right now!

Wow. Obviously this person knows nothing of your work ... I just finished reading your beautiful piece in NY Magazine about the "list keepers" (v behind on my magazines) and found it so beautiful, insightful, vital — like everything you write, and everything you write about queer culture.

For New York Puerto Ricans, Language Matters, But Identity Runs Deeper While Spanish serves as a link to their roots, mastering the language is not the sole determinant of New York Puerto Ricans' sense of belonging to Puerto Rican culture, history, and traditions.

Interesting article ... have been thinking a lot about language & identity as I am attempting to raise my child bilingual ... and also allowing myself to speak Spanish "imperfectly" (whatever that even means) www.thecity.nyc/2025/03/24/p...

"I have been sitting on these images almost like it's a private affair of my heart" Two photographers reflect on Christo and Jeanne-Claude's monumental Central Park installation "The Gates," 20 years later.

THE GATES, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's monumental public art project in Central Park, opened 20 years ago. These two superfans obsessively documented the installation as it morphed and changed through its 16-day run. I talked with them about it: raquellaneri.substack.com/p/i-have-bee...
