Twenty-plus years ago, did big, long Atlantic story based on formal "war game" involving "preemptive" attack on Iran.

Lots of details have changed since then. But not the fundamental conclusion of the war-game: ARE YOU CRAZY?? DO NOT EVEN THINK OF DOING THIS.
Trump admin backs down on Minnesota

Thank God there were people filming. This administration would have said Alex Pretti pulled a handgun, a package of fentanyl, and a signed copy of the Communist Manifesto if they could.
Wolves have a moment of silence for Alex Pretti, after seven seconds of silence several fans yell "FUCK ICE"
"The federal agents themselves looked more like a platoon of soldiers navigating a hostile foreign capital than conventional law enforcement in an American city."

ICE agents kill another person in Minneapolis. "I Smell Nazis" becomes the chant of the day as protestors organize on the scene.

It was my pleasure to participate! Thanks for all your work organizing.
Thanks to all who came out this morning for the 4th annual Op-Ed Workshop at #AHA26. I canβt wait to read the outpouring of op-eds from writers who learned from the rockstar panel of @jamellebouie.net, @kathrynbrownell.bsky.social, @geraldo-cadava.bsky.social, and @syrussolojin.bsky.social! ποΈ

Okay, the Palmer House in Chicago is a cool ass hotel.

My first AHA annual meeting was Chicago 2019 (the before-times!) I was teaching a 4/4 load, so I attended a lot of the teaching sessions, and also non-teaching focused sessions about topics I just wanted to learn more about. I learned a lot and met some really interesting people!

If you're free on Friday morning, Jan. 9: the op-ed workshop is back! @lmansley.bsky.social has organized a rock-star group again this year with @syrussolojin.bsky.social, @kathrynbrownell.bsky.social, @geraldo-cadava.bsky.social, and the one and only @jamellebouie.net

I swear to god, a kid I went to high school with who was posting the βHarris will send me to warβ memes reposted this with βweβre so backβ
Given how much real world events came in and intersected (disrupted!) the teaching of my US military history class,
I can only hope that for my course on the Korean War, absolutely NOTHING important should happen in Northeast Asia during the spring semester.

Saw an absolutely unhinged Facebook ad during the JMU-Oregon game.
A coworker feverishly stalks his boss' socials, scrolling to old photos, looming in the background, biking in the rain, just so he can pick out the perfect Secret Santa gift.
What in the Penn Badgley You is this.
I like to imagine that Texas A&M's destruction in the playoffs was a karmic balance for the university giving up its academic integrity to avoid flak from conservative Twitter users.
A great example of how history is a much needed riposte to the interests of the the powerful.
Carol Rosenberg uncovers that Pvt. Lee's murky story, really, is a tale of a discharged Black veteran left to die with a useless medal on his chest.

With everything going on in the world, nothing gets Marco Rubio going like arguing about *font.*
He really is an internet navel gazer.

My Lai, Iran-Contra, Eddie Gallagher -- the American public is much less likely to clamor for punishment for an American soldier who has a grizzled jawline and shows up to a Congressional hearing with medals on their chest.
The Trump admin's efforts to publicize Admiral Franklin and make him the center of the strikes has an interesting sub-element to it: use the image of a soldier to escape prosecution.
Congress is far more likely to shy away from further action, being reluctant to indict a *soldier.*
The "kill everyone" strike also shows a deep weakness of autocratic militaries that are torpedoing up all norms. Loyalty is now has measured against professionalism, ethics, rationality.
Officers are put in impossible situations.
Why, then, respect civilian authority if they don't respect yours?
