For instance, you can use a life to restart from a checkpoint and not have it negatively affect your score/rank for whatever stage, but running out of lives doesn't send you back to the very start.
In a weird way, it's like making lives intended for advanced players instead of the casual ones.
Last night I was brainstorming ways to give value to lives, and like most of my own ideas, it comes back to having a game be score-attack focused. The main gist being lives acting as safeguards before your score starts being impacted.
