If I accomplish nothing else today, I got my camera flash working reliably again. It took a lot of fiddly cleaning and scraping, but the battery contacts are (almost) like new.
I'd actually considered just getting a new flash, but I'm glad I persevered. This is a decent flash unit.

The last time I had to take one of those was when they forced me into the engineer training at work, but I did fine on it. None of the patterns they showed me were as subtle as some of these variants on this one.
Colour blindness runs in the family, so I only got .0018
I pulled a lot of cables out of the closet while I was cleaning. I'm going to set aside some time tomorrow to go through them and see if any came along with this thing.
I don't know. I could hook up a power cord and see if the lights come on, but it didn't come with any cables or adapters. All but a couple of the ports on the back appear to be proprietary.
