Position Statement on Diagnosis - Reframing Autism This comprehensive position statement, which includes the diagnosis experience testimonies of three Autistic adults, serves as a guiding framework for our research, advocacy efforts and communication....

Do you support people to explore their neurodivergent identity? Please read the Position Statement on Diagnosis from Reframing Autism

It calls for co-designed measures that are responsive to intersectional complexities experienced by Autistic people.

Ways of Being, Knowing and Doing: An Anthology for Neurodivergent-Informed Practice The community has come together to support the Palestinian people. The result is an incredible ebooklet edited by Lisa Chapman and Kim Mears.

There's still plenty of time to treat yourself to this excellent neuro-affirming stocking-filler penned by neurodivergent humans. I see no reason not fill your boots and your brain-bodies with ideas of new ways to develop a nourishing practice πŸ’•

#BIPOC voices are often missing from autistic spaces, so here is a BIPOC starter pack! 😊

The image of autism as β€œonly white boys” leads to underdiagnosis, discrimination & isolation for many

Our autistic community is much more diverse than that! ❀️

Interesting read, thank you. I have wondered why RSD seems to be considered exclusively in relation to ADHD, and not to other neurodevelopmental differences such as autism, but you have explained this very clearly.

If you’re wondering if you might be Autistic but ruling it out because some of the diagnostic criteria don’t apply read on.
Initially Autism wasn’t considered a likely explanation for my difficulties because I was married, employed, seemed to cope with change, and had social skills.

Podcast - Two Sides of the Spectrum A twice-monthly podcast where we explore research, amplify autistic voices, and change the way we think about autism in life and in professional therapy practice.

If you are an occupational therapist who wants to deepen your understanding of neuro-affirming practice AND walk your dog at the same time, I highly recommend the Two Sides of the Spectrum podcast by Learn, Play, Thrive

This dog's crisscross apple sauce front legs stance triggers ultimate cute aggression in me.

I was promoted to reflect on this after reading Ocean Vyong’s poem β€˜Old Glory’ (a confronting read). We think nothing of this language when it’s casually used within its particular context. But the violent nature of it is inherently still true.

Language I avoid using: casual references to violence when congratulating others (like β€˜you killed it, knock them dead’). You may not know what past experiences your listener has had.

A brilliant watch @jceoltasmith.bsky.social, well done!
Devastating language is being used to describe people who deserve care, compassion, and benefits. If people saw how chronically ill people are, and they are still refused help, they wouldn't believe it.

Empire of Normality by Robert Chapman is a phenomenal book that takes a Marxist approach to neurodivergence. Interested in occupational justice? Read this book.

I just finished reading Empire of Normality this evening. It is a tremendously valuable and important book. Now off to consider more deeply how neurodivergent workers can organise as neurodivergents to radically change structures of the workplace, as opposed to exploiting neurodivergent workers.

This sense of β€œembodied coherence” is something I have been trying to articulate for myself with regards to being β€˜in’ and β€˜as’ experiences. I was looking at Romain Rolland’s definition of oceanic feeling, but holotropism is more accurate.

This is fascinating. Definitely worth a read.

Imagine these kinds of ideas being introduced and explored during autism assessments instead of the deficit based approaches we have now.

Last year saw the launch of The Adult Autism Assessment Handbook, the first serious attempt to provide an in-depth guide for anyone conducting adult assessments for autism.

Written from a neurodiversity-affirming perspective, it talks about monotropism in some depth...

Right! Your thoughts remind me that neurodiversity and diagnosis is so intertwined with capitalism and neoliberal values, such as prioritising independence rather than interdependence.

29.11.2024 06:45 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Yes, I strongly agree with this. I think it is common for historical diagnoses not to be reevaluated unless the person themself advocates for it. It makes me wonder how many older people aren’t getting the right kinds of support as a result.
