To my nonbinary, agender, genderqueer, and otherwise off the binary friends & siblings: You are loved, you are valued, you are important to our community, you've been here longer than the tyrants, and you will still be here when their bones are dust and the names of their false gods are forgotten.

Picture of an ostracon (made of limestone) on a grayish background. The ostracon depicts the 3 hieroglyphs for βlifeβ, βstabilityβ and βpowerβ. The sign for life is written in red ink, the others in black ink.
The vertical and horizontal grid lines in red ink are still visible behind the 3 hieroglyphs.
This ostracon shows the hieroglyphs for βlifeβ, βstabilityβ and βpowerβ. Look at the grid system that the artist used to draw the signs at the correct proportion. π€©

Picture of an ancient Egyptian writing board made of wood on a grey black background. The upright format shows several lines of uneven spaced and imperfectly formed hieroglyphs in black ink on a white ground.
Love this writing board from ancient Egypt which shows how an apprentice scribe was practising writing hieroglyphs.

Brightly painted wall inscription from the tomb with depictions of elaborate necklaces, mostly blue with some red and green.
Panoramic view of one of the tomb walls, brightly painted, depicting numerous items of furniture, vessels and other burial goods, with hieroglyphic inscriptions along the top.
How shiny is this?! A new tomb discovered in south Saqqara of a royal physician from the reign of Pepi II.

Image of a broken jar (brownish yellow) on a grey background. The upper half of the jar is on the image - the other half is broken off. There are two lines of hieratic writing in black ink on the jar. Parts of the second line are missing due to the destruction of the jar.
Image of a papyrus on a grey background. The rectangular papyrus has a brownish color and 17 columns of hieratic script is written on it. Some parts of the papyrus are destroyed, as we can see several larger and smaller holes in the papyrus.
What is hieratic? π
Hieratic is a cursive script based on ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Itβs written with ink & a reed brush on papyrus, leather, or other surfaces.
This handwritten script was used as a faster way of writing.

How do you know where to start?
Find signs with a clear front and back (for example, animals or people). They look at the beginning of the text π. So you read into the signs, and from top to bottom.

Picture of the Block statue of Senenmut carrying the daughter of the queen Hatshepsut. Senenmuts body is shown as a block, only his head and the head of hatshepsuts daughter emerge from the block. Hieroglyphs are carved in the block statue. In the back you can see more ancient Egyptian statues in showcases.
Picture of a colourful limestone pillar depicting the king Seti I before the god Osiris (detail) in a museum. Seti I, wearing the royal diadem with cobra, stands before Osiris, wrapped in white mummy bandages. Above them are 5 columns of colourful hieroglyphs.
Picture of the tomb of the official Metjen (detail). The detail shows the false door depicting Metjen in the middle. The walls are covered with hieroglyphs.
What are hieroglyphs?
Hieroglyphs, meaning βsacred carvingsβ, describe an ancient Egyptian script that originated around 3200 BCE. The signs were mostly carved in stone and used on temple & tomb walls, and on other objects such as sarcophagi, statues and stelae.
