Initiatives like Mearns Masters, led by the ever-brilliant Mari-Clare Mitchell, Fearless Women in Computing, led by the amazing Jack Walker, and the work going on in North Lanarkshire primaries with Callum Croughan's involvement all show what’s possible.

The focus on some of the real barriers - recruitment and retention, infrastructure, professional learning, subject attractiveness & gender gap - has been incredibly valuable, alongside a real spotlight on the excellent practice already happening in our schools, from early years through to secondary.
It’s been great to be part of this series of meetings and to contribute to such open, constructive discussions about Computing Science in schools in Scotland.
It was also great to see former pupils and see them thriving.
Hopefully, sharing my story has inspired some of HNC/D students to consider a rewarding career as a Computing Science teacher.

It was a pleasure to work alongside John Duff from the @aberdeenuni to promote the new direct route into CS teaching via college. I took the "scenic route" starting from an HNC, it’s a path I’m immensely proud of.
Last week, I had the privilege of sharing my journey from @StDavidsHS to @EdinburghNapier and, ultimately, into the classroom as a CS teacher. Speaking to HNC/D students at @WestLoCollege & @WestCollScot, Paisley campus was a brilliant experience.
In Scotland, Computing Science has the largest gender gap of any STEM subject, a trend stuck in place for a decade. We often talk about role models, confidence & capability. These are symptoms of the root cause being access & equity.

There are only 550 Computing Science teachers in Scotland, the lowest number we've ever had and we only had 16 new Computing

In complete awe of the amazing work being led by Jack Walker, a true ally in this space, and hugely impressed by the incredible efforts of St George’s School with this initiative, particularly for recognising the importance of Computing Science and making it a core subject from P5 to S2.
If we don’t act fast, we won’t see equality in our lifetimes. This event wasn’t just a step in the right direction; it was a critical action to ensure girls are the architects of a future designed for everyone.
Unfortunately, there is still no equity of access to Computing Science in Scotland. Not every pupil has the opportunity to study the subject and discover whether it’s something they enjoy. For too many, the door isn’t just closed, there is no door.
Beyond proud to be involved in such an inspiring and important event aimed at encouraging more girls to consider a career in the tech sector.
CS at school level in Scotland continues to have the largest gender gap of all traditional STEM subjects and has done for over a decade.
It’s a real privilege to be involved in such an inspiring initiative. Together, we can close the gender gap in CS.

The female uptake at their school is incredible - not just at BGE, but all the way through to AH!
