if you wanna make art just for you, thatβs great. thereβs really no way to fail at that. if other people relate to that and like your art, then thatβs beautiful. if you wanna make art to show the world something, you have to play the game, or the world wonβt pay attention. shrimple as that
realized this makes almost no sense because i had to make it fit in a post. basically i mean that most artists want to be heard, and if you want to be heard, there are conventional methods that we know from experience will work. thatβs the point of objective analysis, to find out what works and why
thats not useful to a game developer though. like thatβs cool if youβre a reviewer on youtube, but when youβre an artist who makes stuff you do have to do research in order to accomplish what you want to. in the case of most games you want to craft an experience that most people will have playing it
what is good design comes down to what youβre trying to do. so if you try to make a challenging game about going fast, but your character is so fast that they fly past the level without encountering a challenge, youβve failed and thatβs objectively bad design. thatβs how i see it

Super is what I and most people I have spoken to have understood to be special about metroid. the whole series isnβt a good representation of this specific thing, no. zero mission and super are pretty much it. fusion is hardly even relevant in this conversation itβs a whole different animal
i think super metroid is definitely the more worthy comparison here because itβs the one that seems to inspire entries in this genre more than anything
it has very different level design to NEStroid
