Wolves FA Cup win attributed to Pope's prayer Lifelong fan Jim Sharma pays a visit to Pope Leo XIV and gifts him a Wolverhampton Wanderers shirt.

Just realised that ever since the Pope got presented with a Wolves shirt and agreed to pray for them, they've beaten Liverpool and Aston Villa and drawn with Arsenal, so I reckon they're in with a chance of using Papal Powers to knock Liverpool out of the cup tonight

We had a council byelection recently (Green/Lab marginal) where a local crank ran on a single issue transphobic platform and got a grand total of 64 votes.

Thornberry is good on this (despite the clunky phrasing) & seems like another weird thing from the leadership being opposed to basic human decency to trans people even simply from an electoral perspective - almost all the people who're going to be weird about this were never going to vote Labour!

There's a bit in Rawnsley's book about New Labour where he mentions that Gordon Brown & Robin Cook hated each other because of some disagreement about Scottish Labour politics in the 1970s & it got to the point where neither of them could remember exactly what it was. Still hated each other tho.

Just realised that the current state of the league could mean that the David Cameron Derby this month is going to be even more exciting than ever. Picturing Dave trying to figure out whether he wants West Ham to stay up or Aston Villa to secure a place in the Champions League.

The curious case of MEP Daniel Hannan and his mysterious country walks In one of the more bizarre developments of silly season 2017, it has emerged that Daniel Hannan, the Conservative MEP […]

Clearly taking a leaf from the Daniel Hannan "fake walk" playbook

There's a place near us called Tropical Sushi that sells fusion Japanese/South American food and I absolutely love the fact that such a thing can exist

who among us can say they haven't been coerced into joining an elephant on a crime spree and then taking the fall due to a lack of perceived civility and having to get a family member to make amends by cooking a giant pancake feast for all parties

Wish I'd taken a picture of his kitchen though, shelves and shelves of Hornsea tea sets. Pls be careful I am assuming through this one anecdote that they can be habit-forming.

I've got a friend who got absolutely hooked on Hornsea tea sets, he used to live on the Isle of Wight and would buy one every time he saw one in a charity shop/jumble sale (which was often on the IoW), eventually his girlfriend made him give all but four away when they moved house.

Same here, although must say all the WBD discourse this morning made me briefly panic that school were actually doing it today despite the fact that I've already done drop-off and there were a distinct absence of miniature Anna Kareninas and Gregor Samsas milling about

this has reminded me of possibly the best book review I've ever seen, an anonymous marxist amazon review of the 1971 children's book "The Elephant and the Bad Baby"

hot take: world dress-as-someone-from-a-book day is good because the kids spend loads of time reading at school anyway but the kids who want to come into school wearing a dragon outfit made out of bits of spraypainted cardboard and all stitched together with a gluegun only get one day a year

the wild thing about the Dr Oetker nazi connection is that they literally still have a bronze bust of their nazi co-founder in their HQ

They lost their deposit in Liverpool Walton in 2015 and 2024 (& in the 1991 byelection), in Bootle in 2024, in Liverpool West Derby in 2024 - hard to find any outside the wider Liverpool area though

As far as I am able to establish, they are the only political party ever to be endorsed by a crisp (the Monster Munch monsters joined Lord Sutch on the campaign trail during the Perth and Kinross byelection in 1995)

(& fwiw I think it's hard to say their candidate is polling third - Opinium had Lab 28%/Ref 27%/Grn 28% two days ago, so although their candidate may well come third it's a stretch to say they're distant in the polling rn)

I think (although I don't have the direct reference right now) that the Labour party rulebook states that they must run a candidate in every parliamentary seat except for the Speakers, so in this case they would have to change the rulebook if they wanted to do this.

Meant to reply to your mounts post yesterday but completely forgot! Am a mount novice but have two beautiful 30cmx40cm prints I've wanted to frame for years. Would you just buy a 40x50cm-ish frame & buy a mount to fit? (Apols for out-of-the-blue question, am bewildered by the range of options!)
