i think (and marketing is probably to blame) that people expected something more transgressive and instead got a sort of fantasy light erotica version of the story aimed at teens. again, not sure if it’s wholly successful at being that, but the amount of Cool Guys mad it’s tame is corny imo lol

i think they are simply operating in different modes and styles and have different intentions. p&p is more realistic, WH is whacky otherworldly stylized adaptation
