Hanabusa was first elected to the Hawaiʻi Senate in 1998 and served in the upper chamber through 2010, including a stint as the first woman Senate president. She went on to win one of Hawaiʻi's two se...
This is a shock. Colleen Hanabusa has held and competed for so many public offices in Hawaiʻi in the short time that I've been there (US House of Representatives, US Senate, Hawaiʻi State Senate, Governor of Hawaiʻi, Mayor of Honolulu, Board of Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation). RIP.

The header on the left is titled "Total dollar value (generally <2,500)" and shows a value of "0.99" below it. The header on the right is titled "Workflow Status" and features a yellow badge containing the text "IN PROGRESS" in all caps.
Having a very productive day of submitting a $0.99 purchase to the office of the vice president for approval. 🥲

A senior scientist spammed a mailing list of most of the scientists in my field with his latest paper in a predatory publisher's journal with nonexistent peer review.
I replied to all with: "We’re going to rescind your PhD for publishing with MDPI."
He was not pleased. 😅

Nature Report, Killed by Trump, Is Released Independently
The report highlights the grim state of freshwater ecosystems, degraded marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and the risk of extinction for many species. But it also emphasizes the potential for improvement through conservation, restoration, and renewed connections between people and nature.

Superfood Fuels Mating Frenzy for Critically Endangered Kakapo
Kakapos, which are reclusive and flightless and can live as long as humans, are found only in New Zealand. They feed on the fruit of the rimu tree.
The kakapo, a critically endangered parrot species that can be found only in New Zealand, are mating at a record pace this year, making the most of one of the best bumper crops in decades of the fruit from coniferous rimu trees, according to scientists.

I don't remember the last time I took one. When I used to cycle a lot in NYC, the worst encounters I had were with yellow cabs and people from NJ.

I remember! Those vehicles are still on the road, but not exclusively, right?

Doors are on my mind today because this guy with the world's largest door opened it without looking (as drivers often do), and only looked back once he was out of the vehicle. The video is at 1/10 speed.

I'm surprised it's legal. I was with someone who got a ticket for doing that in Australia.

It's so much safer when cars are parked facing traffic, because of the door and because a cyclist can see the driver. It becomes dangerous when they are pulling out.

Some unhinged replies here. 🙃
Cycling into a front-hinged door is like cycling into a wall, whereas cycling into a rear-hinged door will push the door closed. It still hurts, but you're not hurled into traffic. Ask me how I know.

If another car gets so close that it crashes into your door, you might have more serious issues than how the door opens. (2/2)

So much to say about this. People in cars aren't the vulnerable road users. Cars don't normally drive in the door zone, but cyclists are almost always there. People are careful opening their doors if there's a car coming, but not so much for bikes. (1/2)
