Raising my hand! It was straight from there to medieval Welsh.

first off, I detest "serial entrepreneurs" the words make my skin crawl.
Second, its intensely ironic to use "the decline of handwriting" cultures to sell an AI that writes for you. Can they hear themselves or are they just lost in the sauce?

It's interesting that this is the tail end of a whole series of supposed emails between Faith and Dr. Kutaywa, apparently first on Instagram. I gather the tone is comic. (Not that some profs are not just this objectionable.)

I like the way the Olympic skiers just collapse onto the ground once they pass the finish line. If only we could do that at the end of the semester.

It's not that they think AI is better. It's that it's easier.

I think the movie "The White Ribbon" (Das Weiße Band) is relevant here. People can be warped by abusive power structures that seem like the only norm in the world.

I can easily see editors recruiting submissions which they will then not send out for review (and thereby keep the fee), and refusing to send out all but sure things (probably by big names) so as to keep the fee. The indie journals are always skint, and the for-profits will also see opportunity.

Painter John Singer Sargent was born on this day in 1856. In 1915 he painted this portrait of University Librarian Francis Jenkinson, to mark the 25th year of his librarianship. It hangs outside the present Librarian's office @theul.bsky.social.

And Seventeen had a writing contest every year. One year I won 3rd place; the 1st-place winner was (now famous writer, then a teenager) Lorrie Moore.

This is why it annoys me when people try to make it seem as if this is how things have always been. There was a time when greater literacy and reading as a part of everyday life for people of every class was a national mission. Then it changed drastically and now we’re here.
