this might be the funniest set of steam chat icons: its literally just five near-identical-looking silhouettes for this game's characters LOL

who on earth would ever use these in a convo

VPX

Abbreviation of "Visual Pinball X".

VPM

Abbreviation of "VPinMAME".

DMD

Abbreviation of "dot matrix display".

Color ROM

A modified VPinMAME ROM to add color to a table's originally-monochrome DMD.

nFozzy

An enhancement to the table's underlying physics, considered widely superior to "stock" Visual Pinball X. Named after the programmer who implemented it. Often paired with FLEEP.

FLEEP

An enhancement to ball sound effects over the defaults included with "stock" tables. Named after the programmer who recorded and implemented these sound effects. Often paired with nFozzy.

FSS

Abbreviation of "Full Single Screen". A table that has been configured to show the playfield, DMD, and backglass all on one screen. Not that important if you're playing in VR, for obvious reasons, but this might be good to look for if you're playing on desktop.

LUT

Abbreviation of "look-up table". A system for changing the color-space on a table, usually with either the Magna Save buttons or the F12 configuration menu.

B2S

Abbreviation of "Backglass 2nd Screen"; a file containing a backglass (the artwork behind the playfield on a pinball machine).

B2Server / B2S Server

A program that can display B2S files when launching a table through Visual Pinball, in a similar vein to VPinMAME.

Note that B2Server is not covered by this guide, as it isn't necessary for most tables.
If you're interested in it, see their Github wiki page!

PUP

Abbreviation of "PinUP". A system used to display media files alongside a table launched through Visual Pinball; the term can also refer to the "packs" containing said media files (usually MP4/video files).

Note that PUP is not covered by this guide, as it isn't necessary for most tables (and I don't fully understand how to install it for an existing VPX installation quite yet).

So now Visual Pinball X is pretty much ready to go, but we still need to get tables.

Tables come in .vpx files that contain an entire pinball table including graphics, scripting, sound effects, etc., similar to a ZIP or a RAR. Outside of tables that require a separate ROM file (we'll get to that in a sec), this is the only thing you really need to play a table.

good news: got the triangles on there! looks nice :]

bad news: discovered the USB-powered LED base i wanted to use (in this pic im using a battery-powered pucklight that runs for like 1 day tops) runs so hot that it might actually be a fire hazard if i run it too long :/
