I wish the public could read the heartfelt goodbye emails I received from colleagues leaving the federal service this week. The brilliance, kindness, and dedication of the U.S. federal civil service is unmatched. Their departures are a loss for me, but also the entire American public. πŸ’”

Trump's NOAA firings leave Northwest workers in 'purgatory' Fisheries scientists who were fired by the Trump administration say they've been living in limbo as their work is sidelined.

Firings at NOAA Fisheries will ultimately hurt fishing communities. The effects of climate change will continue even if we stop studying them.

The wild thing about this is every single one of these 5000 contracts has made it through layers and layers of agency review and been deemed "mission critical" precisely because the secretary is insisting on reviewing them. There are probably 1000s of others that the agency just gave up on.

Every year, thousands of invasive sea lampreys migrate up the rivers around the North American Great Lakes. Recently, Griffin & co discovered that, unlike other fish, sea lampreys stick to the deepest part of the river to stay safe and use less energy

my heart breaks from the stories pouring in from federal public servants. This is tragic, cruel, and represents an existential assault on everything that so many of us have worked on for so long. I am enraged, and if you care about basic human decency or sustainability in America you should be too.

How a Canadian scientist and a venomous lizard helped pave the way for Ozempic - National | Globalnews.ca In 1984, Dr. Daniel Drucker, an endocrinologist from the University of Toronto, discovered a hormone that helped pave the way for popular diabetes drugs such as Ozempic.

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen.

Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying β€œWhy are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !”

"A crisis": Lake whitefish survey paints an even more dire picture One scientist thinks lake whitefish could disappear from certain parts of the Great Lakes within the next five years.

Invasive quagga and zebra mussels have disrupted the food web in parts of the Grest Lakes, diverting nutrients away from planktivorous fishes, thereby "making it extremely difficult for whitefish to reach adulthood in Lake Michigan and Huron".
