Iโm gonna have to copy this. ๐คฉ
Excited to welcome Yiyi Shen to the lab for a rotation through the MCDB graduate program! Yiyi graduated from @ucsandiego.bsky.social and holds a Masterโs from the @salkinstitute.bsky.social where she studied sleep and circadian rhythms!
Thanks!!
Barbie Birthday cake where the dress is frosted with two tones of pink rosettes and pearl accents.
K3 is ๐๏ธ and she wished for a Barbie cake! I made my own frosting this time and decorating was sooo much easier. It still takes me way too long to make bday cakes, though. ๐
If you are submitting an NIH grant in February, you will be required to use SciENcv to prepare you biosketch.
IT IS MUCH WORSE THAN YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE.
Set aside *at least* 4 hours just to transfer an existing an biosketch into SciENcv.
Fun night listening to grad student Emily talk about the effects of alcohol ๐บ on sleep ๐ด at GWIS ๐ฉโ๐ฌ Science โnโ Suds!
Today, Andrew has become the first PhD Candidate in the Ingiosi Lab! Congrats, Andrew!! ๐พ #YourDidItโญ๏ธ
First time making a turkey in 15 years, and I smoked it. Turned out super juicy and pretty easy to do!
Just got an email from my SRO for the study section that was missed in October. Good news is that they are trying to reschedule ASAP (Dec/Jan). The bad news is that CSR is mandating that only the the top third (not half) of applications will get discussed for the next 2 rounds.

Astroglial H1Rs influence neuromodulatory integration and arousal. How histamine modulates arousal via astrocytes was investigated in brain slices and mice with (left; green) and without (right; purple) histamine-1-receptor (H1R) expression in astrocytes of the primary visual cortex (V1). Panels below depict, from left to right, that H1R expression in V1 astrocytes: (1) attenuates astroglial calcium (Caยฒโบ) responses to norepinephrine (NE) in brain slices; (2) suppresses astroglial Caยฒโบโevents during wakefulness; (3) restricts the dynamic range of extracellular adenosine (Ado) around rapid eye movement (REM) sleep transitions (N, non-rapid eye movement sleep; W, wakefulness); and (4) reduces time spent in wakefulness.
Astrocytes help control #sleep & arousal. @ashleyingiosi.bsky.social explores a @plosbiology.org study showing that wake-promoting #histamine affects how #astrocytes respond to other signals, reducing awake time via astroglial histamine-1-receptors ๐งช Paper: plos.io/4gRj9Ap Primer: plos.io/47at1Sj
Some cool and unexpected findings regarding how astrocytes impact sleep and wakefulness through histaminergic signaling! โญ๏ธ
I had a blast this morning talking to 3- & 4-year-olds about being a scientist ๐ฉโ๐ฌ and brains ๐ง during our daycareโs Community Helper Week!
Talk is done! Many thanks to Peter and Carolina for organizing such a stimulating session on glia and sleep! โจ
Also thanks to the insanely bright (blue) mood lighting in our room for being wake-promoting as I navigate a 12h time difference. โ๏ธ
