I agree that if a conflict or disaster is a surprise, then governments should help their citizens get home.
But Iβve never really understood why people who knowingly travel to parts of the world where war is a predictable risk blame their home country for not helping to get them home.

Liberals reach 49% voter support and the party's biggest lead in 10 years: Leger poll
However, the same poll also said nearly half of Canadians don't want an election until 2029.
Small wonder Poilievre decided to leave the country for a while.
At least outside of Canada, heβs got a shot at more than half the people he meets liking him.

Carney urges Australia to join middle power bloc
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared the conflict in the Middle East is another example of the failure of the world order.
βMiddle powers like Canada and, I would suggest, Australia should recognise that the rupture in the international system represents just that,β Mr Carney said.
βWhat that word means is a clear break from the past, and we need to act decisively to secure our shared future.β

U.S. ambassador to Canada requests apology for Globe and Mail column
In a letter to The Globe and Mail, Pete Hoekstra said he was βdisappointed and outragedβ over Cathal Kellyβs column on U.S. menβs hockey team
To be fair, when the NHL let Carter Hart back into the league, the βintelligence, education, and characterβ of every professional hockey player became legitimate targets.

I will be at work, orkids will be at school, whether or not itβs dark outside. Light in the morning doesnβt change my morning.
But light in the evenings has a big effect on whether or not I go for a walk after work. That is a health benefit that standard-time folks donβt seem to acknowledge.

@ximenaka.bsky.social Alberta didnβt βjoinβ Confederation. They were created by the federal government out of federal territory. This isnβt a pedantic difference. It is crucial. Quebec joined Confederation. BC joined Confederation. Nova Scotia joined Confederation.
AB and SK were created by Canada.

I guess thatβs it then. The coup in the USA is nearly complete. War has been declared using the full might of the US armed forces, without the approval of its Congress.
It only remains to have free and fair elections subverted, which I understand is well underway.

Danielle Smith watches her back
Guest writer Ken Boessenkool on the party factions Alberta's premier has to manage
βTake Back and Free Albertans control the UCP and Danielle Smithβs ability to contest the next election.
Both have rallied around separation. Take Back Albertans see a path to a religious state embracing policies from the Trumpian evangelical right. Free Albertans have wanted separation all along.β

Time and time again western intervention in a country turns out tragic for the people who live there and eventually also bad for the west.
Other than UNSC approved actions (like Korea) I canβt think of an example where western intervention has been good for anyone.
We will never learn π

Gem title / genre spotlight emails
Targeted one-title or genre-focused emails.
I love CBC(radio), but TVβ¦how does this get green-lit:
βWild Cards follows the unlikely duo of Max (Vanessa Morgan), a spirited, clever con woman, and Ellis (Giacomo Gianniotti), a by-the-book, sardonic cop as they solve crimes in Vancouver.β
Thatβs the promo blurb. Thatβs the best they could do.

I actually expect this to be major technological shift in our lives and economy. I just donβt buy that itβs immediately a holy grail or an apocalypse.
This first batch of AI models may actually not be the ones that end up changing the world. But I think itβs prudent to learn how to use them.

11 Million Visitors Short: Inside Americaβs Continuing Tourism Slump
βU.K.-based Michelle Cowley and her husband spent two years planning a $16,000 (U.S.) vacation to Walt Disney World. Then their children, ages seven and 11, heard about Renee Good and Alex Pretti being killed by ICE agents and didnβt want to go. America was not looking welcoming.β

The AI productivity boom is not here (yet)
Artificial intelligence is improving fast. Its effect on output, not so much
βThe future may yet tell a different story. But history is usually a safer guide than speculative fiction. It suggests that new technologies create more jobs than they destroy, spread more slowly than enthusiasts expect and lift productivity only once firms reorganise around them.β

As Canadian visits to the U.S. continue to decline, American visits to Canada fall 7.5%, says Statistics Canada
B.C. had the largest decline in American visits partly due to βa series of high-profile concerts (Taylor Swift) in Vancouver," says StatCan.
Good riddance. Keep your guns and your nonsense at home.
βVisits to Canada from overseas countries reflect a cheerier picture. The number of trips to Canada by overseas residents (509,500) increased 14.1 per cent in December, compared with the same month a year earlier.β

Opinion: Alberta cannot just up and leave Canada
Treaties with First Nations, unique realities of provinceβs founding mean a majority in a referendum wonβt be enough to separate from Canada
Finally, discussion that Alberta, invented by the Parliament of Canada via the federal Alberta Act, is not in the position of provinces that were nations prior to Confederation, and canβt choose to secede
βThey have no unilateral right to do so under the Canadian Constitution or international law.β
