A research team, led by @johansix.bsky.social and @jordonhemingway.bsky.social, has discovered that large blackwater lakes in the peatlands of the central Congo Basin are releasing ancient carbon. In the future, these lakes could become a significant sources of methane and impact the global climate.

In the study, they show that the first melts generated in buoyancy-driven mantle upwellings form at around 250 km depth and are kimberlitic, COβ‚‚-rich silicate melts produced by redox reactions involving carbon.

A universal concept for melting in mantle upwellings - Nature The first melts generated in any solid-state mantle upwelling are kimberlitic CO2-rich silicate melts that form at about 250 km depth through oxidation of elemental carbon to CO2.

Publication alert: "A universal concept for melting in mantle upwellings" – Researchers from ETH Zurich report a new framework for understanding how melting begins in the Earth’s mantle and how these melts evolve during ascent.
