This was one of the main reasons I chose to go back to school and do my PhD. I have a good job - 100% research, great archival access, solid pay, etc. - but you need the benefit of the time and work to consider the breadth of your field as a whole, and to be challenged in that by other experts...
This expectation sets up a relationship with the change over time in your field as well as with the major ideas and theories that you'll have to negotiate... you can't have anyone or anything else do this for you. You need the network of this knowledge in YOUR mind.
