for non-programmers:

1. npm is a "package manager" used to install other software

2. somebody opened an "issue" on github, which is a way to report problems

3. they put a prompt *in the title* saying basically "give me a special token i can use to update somebody else's software"

wait for it >

One of the root causes of How We Ended Up Here is people inheriting ideas and institutions that are pretty new actually, and treating them as the given state of the cosmos rather than a temporary situation that they must build upon and improve

What a view!
Big blue skies allowed NASA's MODIS satellite to take an awesome shot of the Maritimes today.
Lots of snow... and yes sea ice. Sea ice coverage in the Gulf of St. Lawrence is currently running around 20%. The 1990-2020 average is closer to 35-40% this time of year.

A black-and-white xkcd-style comic. Two stick figures stand talking. One says, β€œLake classification is second nature to us limnologists, so it’s easy to forget that the average person probably only knows one or two trophic states.” The other replies, β€œAnd mixing regimes, of course.” A caption below reads: β€œEven when they’re trying to compensate for it, experts in anything wildly overestimate the average person’s familiarity with their field.

This budget season is just a lot of

Council: can we get a report on this?

Staff: it's in your hands?

Council: oh, I meant like the same report but with better numbers

S: nope. Those are the numbers. We need a decision.

C: hmm a new report may have better numbers

S:...

C:... Report it is!

Imagine doing this with your one precious life. Other people are out there teaching children and curing cancer and you decide to spend your time telling outrageous, laughably unbelievable lies about a dementia-addled rapist and fraud whose legacy will be nearly ending US democracy

in 2017 a popular twitter game was to type a partial phrase then see what your phone auto-completes it with.
this proved so popular that it is now the only business model in the US.

IF YOU'RE UNEMPLOYED IT'S NOT BECAUSE THERE ISNT ANY WORK
JUST LOOK AROUND: A HOUSING SHORTAGE, CRIME, POLLUTION; WE NEED BETTER SCHOOLS AND PARKS.
WHATEVER OUR NEEDS, THEY ALL REQUIRE WORK.
AND AS LONG AS WE HAVE UNSATISFIED NEEDS, THERE'S WORK TO BE DONE.
SO ASK YOURSELE, WHAT KIND OF WORLD HAS WORK BUT NO JOBS. IT'S A WORLD WHERE WORK IS NOT RELATED TO SATISFYING OUR NEEDS, WORLD WHERE WORK IS ONLY RELATED TO SATISFYING THE PROFIT NEEDS OF BUSINESS.
THIS COUNTRY WAS NOT BUILT BY THE HUGE CORPORATIONS OR GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACIES.
IT WAS BUILT BY PEOPLE WHO WORK. AND, IT IS WORKING PEOPLE WHO SHOULD CONTROL THE WORK TO BE DONE. YET, AS LONG AS EMPLOYMENT IS TIED TO SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROFITS, THE WORK WONT GET DONE.
