A person that's way too good at a game, yet still plays it, is no different than the people who they may despise that demand 'easy modes' so anyone can see the ending of the game. A 'bad' player that persists despite repeated failure will see the light of heaven while the pro player will not.
Being good at a video game is anti-art.
It's a narcissistic endeavor. Things like long queue times or growing obsessions with meta and optimization sapping away the fun is punishment for the hubris of seeking mastery over a piece of art. Gaming skill is a security blanket to avoid challenge.
I don't personally agree with the latter because art needs to be created by a person. From my perspective a sunset can't be art in of itself but a sunset through a window is. Even a tree cleared to create a better view is art, not because of it's aesthetic enhancements but because of human acts
Yeah art by committee is still art. To rob something of the title of art just because you don't like it is very dumb. Reminds be of all the people like totalbiscuit back in the day that tried to claim certain games weren't games
Hurt some games I love for sure but for the vast majority it seems like it was a sweet deal. Sure maybe pheonix point ended up losing the mandate of tactics games heaven because of it, but I know people who said everyone involved wouldn't have changed a thing due to expected low pickup rates anyway
All video games are art. It's just that some are more more 'product-focused' than others. Soulless AAA games are just as much art as the itch.io solodev games that never make a cent in their life. The only games that aren't art are the AI porn games that are flooding steam right now
