Who are women?
In the census, in Shakespeare, and in history, women have often been categorized only by their relationship to others: daughter, wife, widow.
This March, we are spotlighting the brilliant women who challenge, define, and expand our knowledge.

What does it mean to live the life you actually want?
For the inaugural edition of the EXPeditions Book Club, we are honored to present a profound conversation between world-renowned psychoanalyst Adam Phillips and acclaimed writer Lisa Appignanesi.

💬 While the UK was still resisting handing over the Chagos Islands, Sands wrote that "the overarching, devastating irony is that it was Britain and the United States that created the rules that are premised around the United Nations Charter who were opposing closing the book on colonisation."
Join the EXPeditions book club! 📚
Our first book is Adam Phillips’ latest: THE LIFE YOU WANT on February 24th 7 pm (UK) introduced by Adam Phillips and Lisa Appignanesi.

Loneliness is not just personal; it’s structural and universal. What would it take to design a society in which we can reconnect, belong and feel supported in the world around us?

We enter the new year with great resolutions: Dry January, going to the gym twice a week, no sugar, no fat…
But have you ever thought about going to a museum or joining a choir? Did you know that art can have a real effect on your health? 🎨
Welcome to 2026! ✨
2025 reminded us of the vital role that curiosity, trust, and dialogue play in connecting people and ideas across disciplines and borders. With this spirit, we step into 2026 ready to explore new perspectives and continue bridging the worlds of research and the public.
The modelling assumptions we make, and the prior conceptions we bring to a restoration, strongly influence the final outcome.
This case illustrates a central principle of image restoration and inpainting: everything depends on the prior information introduced into the process and on how closely one adheres to the available data and evidence—in this case, the damaged painting or fresco of Jesus Christ.
In the case of Cecilia Giménez, the daily sight of a severely damaged portrait of Jesus Christ became unbearable. Deeply distressed by its condition, she decided to restore the painting herself, despite having no formal artistic training.
Carola Schönlieb, Professor of Applied Mathematics and an author at EXPeditions, explains the challenges of developing mathematical methodologies for image inpainting and creating results that are visually plausible.

The death of Cecilia Giménez, who became famous for restoring the Ecce Homo portrait in Borja, Spain, reminds us of a fundamental dilemma in art restoration: what is “good” or “bad” restoration, and what does it mean to be faithful to the original?
