Lecture description:
Baie Sainte-Marie Acadian French: An โ€œolder Frenchโ€?
Thursday, March 12 | 5:30-6:30 pm
Loyola 174, Saint Mary's University

All are welcome to attend this Arts With Impact public lecture, presented by the Linguistics program. Guest speaker Dr. Philip Comeau is Full Professor and Vice-doyen des รฉtudes universitaires, Universitรฉ Sainte-Anne in Pointe-de-lโ€™ร‰glise, Nova Scotia.

A common perception of Acadian French is that it is an โ€œolder dialect of Frenchโ€ or โ€œFrench as it was spoken in the 17th century.โ€ In his talk, Dr. Comeau questions this general perception, focusing on French varieties spoken in southwest Nova Scotia, particularly in the regions of Baie Sainte-Marie and Par-en-Bas. He will present findings from a project using data spanning four centuries.

Even though many of the conservative or older features of French have persisted, one of the conclusions is that Baie Sainte-Marie Acadian French is clearly no exception to the rule that living languages are constantly changing. https://loom.ly/_AhKHfM

Text: New course offering with the Department of Anthropology
What's the Deal with Taylor Swift?
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30-3:45 pm
with Dr. Rylan Higgins
Winter 2026

Course description:
The social, cultural and economic noteworthiness of Taylor Swift is hard to overstate. Her influence and wealth are staggering, her reach, spectacularly global. Her appeal to hundreds of millions of people is mindboggling. This course takes these aspects of Swiftโ€™s celebrity status as a starting point and endeavours to interrogate and understand the nature of her appeal, power and influence.

The anthropology of the celebrity reminds us that it is a social construct, the product of the publicโ€™s interactions with the entertainment industry. Indeed, celebrity figures have been referred to as โ€œAmericaโ€™s royalty.โ€ But even among this noble class, Swift stands out. In this course, we will explore Swift as a global celebrity juggernaut.
