Illustration of a massive black panther-like creature crouched beneath a tree. Its fur is dark and dense, blending into the shadows, while its eyes blaze with bright red fire. The scene has a misty, eerie atmosphere, evoking a sense of ancient wilderness and myth.
Folklorist Vance Randolph noted that Ozark storytellers treated the Howlerβs fiery eyes as a sign, a spark from the underworld or the forge of creation itself. Either way, fire meant power, and only the foolish ignored its warning.

The mists of Caddo Lake hold stories much older than Texas, told for generations by the Caddo Nation, whose ancestral lands include this region.
Fog, memory, and spirit intertwine on the bayou.

Three costumed figures at a Fasnacht parade in Bad Rotenfels, Germany, 2016. They wear traditional carved wooden masks: two grotesque witch faces with hooked noses, bulging eyes, and black headscarves decorated with pins, and one horned, animal-like mask with a shaggy mane. The scene reflects Alpine carnival traditions where such masks are used to drive away winter spirits. Baden de, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons
In Alpine traditions, wooden masks, called Larven, were passed down through families. At Fasnacht, they danced to drive out winter spirits. Many of these βwitchesβ were actually men in drag. A reminder that the witch figure was always a liminal one.

Soup is a story of the turning season. Autumn harvests of pumpkins, squashes, & roots all find their way into the pot. Every ladle carries tradition, a tasty reminder that food is folklore too. What's your favorite Fall soup?

Graphic of two black football helmets facing each other on a green football field background. Each helmet displays a fierce golden cat head with an open mouth as the logo. Above the helmets, bold gold text reads βWAMPUS CATS.ββ
In Texas, the Wampus Cat has leapt from forest creature to Friday night lights. Once feared in folklore as a half-woman, half-cat, itβs now a high school football mascot. Proof that the stories we whisper become the symbols we wear. πΎπ

Stylized painting of a woman in an apron standing in a golden field under a dark blue night sky, gazing up at a large red Blood Moon rising over layered Ozark-like mountains. The image evokes rural folklore and the symbolic Corn Moon harvest season.
This Blood Moon rises tonight on the Corn Moon, the time of gathering, storing, and sharing the harvest.
Folklore says red moons mark change, and maybe tonight itβs simply to nudge us to savor what weβve gathered, and release what no longer serves.

Arthur Spiderwick's notes about the Common House Brownie, from the Spiderwick Chronicles series of books, by Tony DiTerlizzi. I can't read the smaller text, but it shows a little man with funny ears in a white tunic and green striped pants, no shoes, and a hat of a thimble, needle, and other random bits, with a badminton feather duster, showing bread and honey above.
Leave out milk, bread, and honey and you'll have less housework to do: the brownie is a Scottish spirit that at night will tidy up the home a bit if given offerings. If ignored or offended, they become boggarts, so be kind. #FolkyFriday

Ozark Mountain planting lore says: Cut sprouts in the dark of the moon, when the sign is in the heart (Leo).
Farmers mapped the zodiac onto the body: Leo = heart, Gemini = arms, etc., and planned their work accordingly.
