A color image of the disc of the Milky Way. Unlike much modern astrophotography, this is not taken as an image stack but rather "as the eye would see it". The perfectly clear night gives a beautiful view of the faint colors of the disc of the Milky Way, which runs nearly vertically through the frame. Trees in the upper right and bottom left obscure just a small portion of the sky and give a sense of place. A wide field of view shows a huge expanse of the sky, including most of the central disc of our galaxy. For those who look very closely, the points of each star are actually lines, not points, as the earth spins measurably during the 30 seconds of exposure time.
