We wrapped up Day 1 of #CUSAConf25 watching and discussing @joinordiefilm.bsky.socialβa powerful documentary about the work of social scientist Robert Putnam and why social capital is vital to the wellbeing of ourselves, our communities, and American democracy.
New Substack dropped! It's about community - and a screening I helped host of @joinordiefilm.bsky.social about Bob Putnam's research / Bowling Alone
Even better? You get to see a childhood pic of me looking like a dingus

Hey, @strongtowns.org and @joinordiefilm.bsky.social: One of the things #GreenfieldMA has going for it is its 9 natural red clay tennis courts. Why? Because amateurs pitched in and saved something good about the place where they lived. #varticles andrewvarnon.blogspot.com/2016/05/clay...

Highly recommend βJoin or Dieβ on Netflix for anyone looking to do something practical and easy to help improve our society. (TLDR- join any organization where you will run into people with different perspectives.)

everyone should watch βJoin or Dieβ on Netflix. My own experience: I announced a book club in my neighborhood, chose Orbital: a Novel as the first book, and 14 people showed up on Saturday. Maybe people are not identifying as Czech these days?
Watched 'Join or Die' on Netflix last night. Excellent content and narrative. Based on work by Robert Putnam and is book 'Bowling Alone'. This is a great time to get involved locally and build your network. We need to renew community engagement. #SocialCapital
Highly recommend Join or Die on Netflix. Incredible documentary not only showcasing the value of social science, but presenting significant evidence that building community and social networks are our path to resiliency #anthropology #socialscience
"Join or Die" on Netflix is based on Bowling Alone," a book by Robert Putnam in the 1970s. It's about the decline of civic engagement and how to get it back to restore Democracy. I'm enlightened and motivated. Let's have a picnic!

The PSJ is more than just a newspaperβweβre a hub for community connection and engagement. In 2025, weβre bringing thought-provoking programming like the documentary JOIN OR DIE to spark important conversations and strengthen our Pueblo community.
βJoin or Dieβ is a good documentary that shows how important it is to link together with other people. I have joined the League of Women Voters and have plenty of solid action items Iβll be working on over the next several years ππΌ
It was such a pleasure to visit Masonic Pathways for the Grand Lodge of Michigan's showing of "Join or Die," a very important documentary focusing on the necessity of social capital and the decline of social.connectivity since the 1920's. Plus, I got to visit a true Masonic jewel!
I want to personally thank @dianabutlerbass.bsky.social for recommending the Netflix documentary "Join or Die".
It gave me a clearer picture on how social capital and community is critical for our democracy and how we can use it to make change.
Watch it. It will give you hope and tools to start!
Highly recommend:
"Join or Die" on Netflix about community in America.
Stunning conclusions about how hierarchy destroys trust, well-being, and democracy -- and how horizontal social connections create meaning, purpose, equality, and commitment to better societies.
Inspiring! Organize!
A good Netflix docu to add to your watchlist if youβre trying to stay informed:
JOIN OR DIE
A film on the history of social capital/the rise and fall of community and the impact of chronic individualism and isolation
(Which also takes into account discrimination, desegregation, etc)
Just watched Join or Die on Netflix and enjoyed it a lot; suddenly oldest and I are kind of big fans of Bob Putnam?
Very glad I went with that one instead of the JonBenet thing.
If you are remotely concerned about the future of democracy in the US, you should watch "Join or Die" on Netflix. It makes a very compelling argument that in order to strengthen democracy, we need to create more in-person community and civic organizations. It's fascinating.
If you have Netflix, I highly recommend watching the documentary "Join or Die."
An important message, entertainingly and convincingly made.
Then go join a club. Or start one.

Can't recommend this film enough! @joinordiefilm.bsky.social
Watching Join or Die on Netflix (recommend) and can't help but think about gaming groups.
Enjoying the social capital attached to a regular gaming group may have more benefits than we realize.
Join or Die, the documentary about Robert Putnam (author of Bowling Alone and popularizer of βsocial capitalβ) that I posted about back in February, is now available on Netflix. [netflix.com]

There is a great documentary on Netflix, "Join or Die," about the decline of clubs and fraternal groups and the like, and how it has atomized society.
