The bike I was riding today has no studs, but my regular winter bike has them. But some of the ice conditions in the river valley are impassable, studs or no. Here's a photo of the area where I fell last year. It's not as bad this year, but still not great and I'm much more nervous.

You CAN do it. This is just atypically bad year for winter cycling. I've been a die-hard winter cyclist since 2019, but this year I didn't ride for the entire month of December. It's okay to take a break and try it again when things are better.

For personal and practical reasons, I had a cycling commute hiatus. I chose to return to it, inadvisably, on an extremely cold day out of pure stubbornness.

CBC radio triggered my biggest pet peeve this a.m. saying “The funicular is always down.”
It has some outages, and status problems , but it mostly works and it’s a great feature.

Terrifying!
Green plastic container filled with crackers and cheese on the top of an open pannier. Glow from the red taillight is visible.
An unfamiliar noise could indicate a major mechanical malfunction is imminent, and you may be about to have an accident.
This morning, the weird noise was just my lunch crackers rattling in my plastic container, so all good!

Bike Commuting tip #1: If you hear an unfamiliar noise from your bike, even if it's running smoothly, STOP to investigate! In 2017, I thought nothing of a metallic twang I heard, which turned out to be a bungy cable disconnecting and working its way into my derailleur.
What a wipeout that was!
