Have said this before in other forms, but will reiterate it here: if you're doing long-form writing of any sort, reading the words aloud into a microphone is a completely unparalleled cheat code. It's free, easy, and so effective it feels like it shouldn't be allowed. I do it in a few stages...

It's another Friday! One alcoholic and one non-alcoholic drink for our Friday-at-home #cocktails this week. That's a Botivo, and a rye boulevardier. Bitterness all round - in a good way. Cheers!

There just isn't evidence that software engineering jobs are being lost because of AI.

When you look at individual companies which have cut jobs, I think this question explains a lot: 'Which sounds better to investors: β€œOops, we over-hired!” or β€œWe’re cutting edge with this AI stuff!”'

When is an international station not an international station? The great Stratford mystery.

It is not quite true that Stratford International has never seen an international train: it sees them rather a lot. What is true, however, is that they don’t stop. Not once; not ever. What, you might wonder, the hell?

Small Prophets, cosy comedy and semantic satiation Good comedy does not have to be a four-laughs-a-minute joke-fest. It can be more than that.

I had a few thoughts about Small Prophets, different styles of comedy and why, perhaps, new writers are pushed towards quickfire gag-a-thons instead of writing stuff that's more novel and interesting.

Comparing fuel pumps to electric vehicle public chargers

There are now almost twice as many public electric car charging points in the UK as there are petrol/diesel fuel pumps, a government analysis has found.

Obviously it's not a perfect like-for-like comparison given recharging/fuelling times, but symbolically important.

I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.

If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.

If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.

so you've probably heard about the London measles outbreak. A lot of people are talking about anti-vax misinformation, but that's not actually the problem here. The problem is austerity. 🧡

Who's the billionaire behind London’s biggest mass eviction? He's the London philanthropist who says he's committed to solving homelessness. So why is Asif Aziz's Criterion Capital rushing to make hundreds of Londoners homeless in the coming weeks?

London’s β€œworst mass eviction in recent history” is underway; hundreds of households across London told to get out of their homes this week by the same landlord, ahead of the renters rights act. The landlord? Billionaire Asif Aziz’s Criterion Capital. www.londoncentric.media/p/asif-aziz-...

Highlander II. It went out of its way to undermine everything that was good about the first film.

"Desecration" feels like too strong a word to use in relation to Highlander, which admittedly wasn't great. But dammit, it was cool. And Highlander II just tore up its story for no good reason.

Best Way To Keep A Secret In Software Development? Document It Once upon a time, in a magical land far, far way – just north of London Bridge – I wore the shiny cape and pointy hat of a senior software architect. A big part of my job was to documen…

Documentation's useful until you need it.

Perhaps what we need isn't better architecture documentation, but better architecture *visualisation*, and a highly-collaborative and continuous design process?

Living in Minnesota right now feels like being in the emergency room. Literally everyone is suffering in different ways, even if it's "just" a badly twisted ankle rather than a kidney stone or a full-on heart attack. The staff are working as hard as they can but energy and resources are dwindling.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
