This essay was years in the researching/writing, and Iβm thrilled that it landed in such a beautiful magazine.
This is my sonβs joke, btw.
On it!
I found a picture of the real Stagger Lee, and it was not what I expected:
Trump is going to make that little boy give him the Grammy.
Hell yeah thatβs Nick Offerman raving about my wifeβs podcast. Because itβs the best one.
Aaron Rodgers in the postgame press conference complaining about βTwitter expertsβ ruining football. Heβs so close to getting it.
It was one thing when Mr. Trump called a reporter "piggy." Or casually threatened to put a half-dozen members of Congress to death for accurately stating the laws of war. Or labeled all Somali immigrants "garbage." Or declared that daring to question his physical energy level at age 79 "seditious, perhaps even treasonous." But when Mr. Trump cavalierly attacked the Hollywood icon Rob Reiner just hours after his body was found in a grisly murder scene, it sickened even some of his own political allies.
βYes, you in the back, I see you have your hand up.β
βWhy was it βone thingβ all those other times? I mean, I know why, we all do, I just think itβd be good to acknowledge it.β
My son is funny.

"than to have us feel awful about who we are."

As long as Iβve got my laptop and summer breaks, no urban legend is safe.
Kansas too!
I gotta say it was a good day

He doesnβt realize that his is a non-speaking role.
Whenever I see Mary Ruefleβs βMadness, Rack, and Honeyβ my brain sings it to βLawyers, Guns, and Money.β
Sonnet in The London Magazine!
Waywiser Press did a wonderful anthology of them a few years back, βJiggery Pokery Semicentennial.β Recommended!
Attention versiverse: Gretchen McCulloch writes double dactyls.
Thank you!
News!
Not at all surprising that the notoriously nimble Democratic political machine planned ahead 23 years to plant a fake Trump drawing in Epstein's birthday book. That Chuck Schumer sees around corners!
This is a good joke and also my son wrote it
Talking levee-camp hollers on the Smarty Pants podcast. When the work is peonage, the work songs become protests.
Who killed the Mercy Man? If levee bosses were just a bunch of interchangeable Mr. Charlies, then they all did.
