Do car-free zones hurt disabled people? We asked experts.
City planners and advocates are seeing "accessibility used as a political football."
“…disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people and more likely to get around by walking and rolling and taking transit. Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folks…”— @nondriver.bsky.social
Don’t use accessibility “as a political football.”

One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss
Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.
“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”
“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath
Some costs aren’t costs.

In cities, street space is a really scarce (and under-valued) commodity. Increasing vehicle size costs everyone.
And vehicle weight determines your impact on the wear-and-tear of cities.
So this kind of public policy is really just common sense.

The Ride-Hail Utopia That Got Stuck in Traffic
Uber and Lyft said they would ease congestion. Instead they made it worse.
Don’t forget, for many years #Uber insisted loudly that it would reduce traffic in cities. Instead, Uber drivers cruise without passengers 40% of the time. Uber and Lyft no longer claim they reduce traffic. They now admit they increase congestion.
So much for “making cities better…”

People on bikes in a protected bike-lane in downtown Vancouver.
Never forget, when you’re being asked to prove that safe bike-lanes or pedestrian crossings across currently unsafe conditions are ‘needed,’ it's hard to justify a bridge by the number of people swimming across a raging river.

“Believe it or not, electric bikes offer more exercise than pedal bikes on average. That might sound strange, but the science is clear.”
Why e-bikes give more exercise than “acoustic” bikes. (but both are excellent for better cities, and both are a LOT cheaper than cars, especially after tariffs!)

Graphics fill of statistics on the efficiency or in efficiency of cars
A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people.
Sound efficient?

Shoppers’ Mobility Habits: Retailers Overestimate Car Use
“The survey revealed that traders who drive to their business estimated much higher customer car use (29%) than traders that use other modes of transport (between 10% and 19%).”
The actual car use was 7%.
Yet another survey showing again that retailers constantly overestimate customer car-use.

READ THIS! You don’t just improve city life by removing something bad (cars). You do it by putting wonderful things for people where the cars used to be! Read #Oslo’s “Car-Free” Livability Program (it’s not really car-free, but there are a lot fewer of them):

Bollards and ‘superblocks’: how Europe’s cities are turning on the car
In Paris, Barcelona and Brussels, authorities are adopting varied approaches to the task of reducing congestion and pollution
“A startling statistic emerged in Paris last month: during the morning and evening rush hours, on representative main thoroughfares crisscrossing the French capital, there are now more bicycles than cars – almost half as many again, in fact.”

People Walking Spend More In U.K. Shops Than Motorists, Finds ‘Pedestrian Pound’ Research
The third iteration of The Pedestrian Pound shows that people on foot spend more money than people arriving by car.
RESEARCH: People Walking Spend More In U.K. Shops Than Motorists.
For the record, people on bikes & riding transit do too.
