My theory is Kirk was shot with an armor-peircing (black tipped) bullet that would punch a clean hole, which would be like a .223 round. While I am not a gun nut, I have fired similar rounds many times, & a gun nut sources (Green Beret) think so as well.
The *next day* the FBI finds the gun the dog(s) missed. Highly unlikely the dog would have missed a recently fired gun, so that means the gun was likely not there at that time, OR was not even fired but possibly left as a decoy. (The lulz--according to bullet sayings.)
