With sorrow, we announce the passing of FOBAZI M. ETTARH 1989 - 2026. Fobazi changed so many lives with her friendship, love, and brilliance. She was so loved, and leaves behind a powerful legacy. We thank Fobazi's community for their support over the last several months of her illness. A private burial will be held for family. We will be in touch with further information about a future Celebration of Life event, as well as ways to support Fobazi's family and legacy.
Hello all, we’ve posted an update on Fobazi here:

I try to pay it forward by sharing this article with every student that now comes through my course. Thank you for making me aware of this opportunity to donate.
Fobazi’s article about vocational awe was one of the first things I read in my master’s program at UW, and it set the tone for the type of librarian I would become and in turn influence how I mentor the next generation of librarians. Please donate if you’re able. This field owes so much to her.
Hello friends, our little family could really use your support right now. Please share, send healing thoughts, prayers, etc. ❤️

We found “culture of credit” programs introduced by TikTok framed attribution as “going above and beyond,” urging creators to “always assume good intent.” Warnings to “be nice” & “gently” request credit show how TikTok normalizes content theft and casts Black creators as unruly.
Humor and Black joy persisted through both, but while #MelaninMansion optimistically focused on representation, the later strike represented refusal and frustration with the TikTok platform AND community. Also interesting if you’ve wondered about the aftermath of the strike:
📣New Article 📣 out with @moniermel.bsky.social! In it, we argue the #MelaninMansion trend and later #BlackTikTokStrike show how Black TikTok has changed in their response to the platform’s culture of racism, appropriation, and creative theft. #OpenAccess: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... Short🧵:
Taking the opportunity days before the TikTok ban to re-promote my New Media & Society paper (co-authored with @elenamaris.bsky.social and @hibby.bsky.social) about mutual aid practices on TikTok journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
It was not all “dance videos” (but even if it was?).
“Acknowledge,” not condemn. “Cultural generalization,” not racist stereotype. “Reinforces implicit biases,” not made explicitly racist statements. “Dedicated to being a diverse and inclusive place,” not we failed our diverse community by platforming racism and xenophobia. 🥴
