Since 2012, 150 journalists have been killed for reporting on corruption outside of war zones. Almost all of them died in countries with high levels of corruption.

Average CPI 2025 score for different types of corruption. Transparency International.
The #CPI2025 shows a clear gap between democracies & authoritarian regimes. Full democracies score 71 out of 100 on average, while authoritarian states score just 32. This underlines the importance of independent institutions.

We urge authorities in all countries linked to this scheme to follow Germany’s example and take action to prevent the undermining of democratic institutions.
Since 2017, Transparency International has been pushing for accountability in this case. Although the judgment could still be overturned on appeal, it is encouraging that the case has progressed this far in Germany.
While some European politicians were accepting bribes to promote Azerbaijan’s interests and silence dissent within the Council of Europe, human rights activists and political prisoners sat behind bars in Baku.
This week marks an important step forward for accountability in Germany and Europe. Axel Fischer, former member of the German Bundestag, was convicted for his involvement in the Azerbaijani Laundromat, a massive cross-border bribery and reputation-laundering scandal.

Now more than ever, we need the international community to step up to protect a rules-based global order that is grounded in transparency, accountability to citizens, and respect for human rights.
We stand with Transparency International Greenland and Transparency International Denmark who are calling for self-determination and national sovereignty to be respected.
A US military take-over of Greenland appears to be off the table – for now. But it’s vital that the people of Greenland are able to decide their future and how their natural resources are managed, free from threats or pressure.
In an interconnected world, we need multilateral co-operation to protect the public interest and tackle shared problems, including the fight against corruption. 🧵 ⬇️
