a good part of me thinks that in addition to everything else, the reason they are scrubbing these stories is they do not want disadvantaged kids to believe they can aspire to anything other than their designated “black” or “hispanic” or “woman” job

I've been in gamedev for over 20 years and there's never been a worse market for game writers. I say this as a hiring manager AND as someone who switched jobs in the middle of all these layoffs. It's ROUGH out there
Apparently all the PhD researchers holding prestigious NSF-funded research fellowships are having their salaries withheld until some unspecified time when the leadership figures out how to eliminate any grant funding that doesn’t align with the president’s political ideology.
This isn’t meant to gatekeep; it’s simply trying to be honest about how saturated the field is and that it’s only getting worse with layoffs. If you can do (or learn to do) something else, you probably should. I can’t & won’t stop anyone from trying but I don’t recommend it!
I am not trying to be cruel but I agree: it is an enormously bad time to be trying to break into games. It’s a bad time to be a senior+ in games even, & I don’t see it improving soon. By all means, keep making art you care about, but it’s so unlikely to be a “pay the bills” career at this point.
