The DCC trap at Thai ATMs:

When the ATM asks "charge in your home currency?"

ALWAYS press NO.

Saying yes costs you 3-5% extra. On a $700 withdrawal, that's $21-35 gone.

Choose Thai Baht. Let your bank handle conversion.

Chiang Mai vs Bangkok โ€” coworking compared:

Chiang Mai:

Yellow: $85/mo
CAMP: Free

Bangkok:
Major spaces: $105-210/mo
Cafe working: $3-5/day (drink purchase)

Chiang Mai coworking is 30-50% cheaper with stronger nomad community.

Riding without a motorcycle license in Thailand:

โ†’ Fine: up to 2,000 THB ($57)
โ†’ Insurance: completely void
โ†’ Hospital: can hold your passport
โ†’ Accident: you pay 100% of damages
โ†’ Rental: shop won't cover anything

A license costs $3-43 and takes 2 days. Not worth the risk.

Bangkok transport costs vs Chiang Mai:

Bangkok:
BTS/MRT: $1-2 per ride
Monthly pass: $35-45
Grab taxi: $3-8

Chiang Mai:
Scooter rental: $85-115/mo

Chiang Mai wins if you scooter. Bangkok wins if you hate traffic.

Me personally, bought a brand new bike, got my license and pay for tier one insurance. I also live in Bangkok where traffic is no joke, and commute to work everyday. So for me better safe then sorry.

Yea same goes here renting bikes is cheap, used bikes are cheap. The point of the license is that your covered, no chance of fine etc. If your on the proper visa, there is no reason not to have one for insurance purposes. Simple road test and online exam. But it's up to each individual in the end.

Get a Wise card before you fly.
Thai ATMs charge 220 THB ($6.50) per withdrawal for foreign cards. Wise gives you the real exchange rate with minimal fees. Over a year, it saves you hundreds of dollars.

Don't sign a lease in your first week.
Everything looks amazing when it's new. See at least 5-6 apartments. Negotiate. The first price is never the final price. And don't pay more than 2 months deposit + 1 month advance.

The time difference point is real though. That's the hidden cost nobody talks about late night client calls and weird sleep schedules. Might have to write a blog on that one.
Appreciate the perspective from Cambodia always good to hear from someone actually living it.

Both valid.
VPN though I'd push back on that one. Public WiFi across SEA is mostly unencrypted. If you're accessing banking, client files, or anything sensitive from a cafe or shared network, you're exposed.

20.02.2026 14:33 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Great points and Cambodia is a different beast cost-wise, love that. The coworking vs home setup depends on your work style. Some nomads need the community and structure, others thrive from a bungalow with fiber. Both valid.
